stuck in WM splash screen
Hey I recently upgraded to WM6 and everything on my Apache has been running fine. It just froze so I just soft reset it. Now it's stuck on the green splash screen. Any suggestions?
|
Mine just did the same thing.
Looks like time to reload WM6. -Surfer |
You can either hard reset or flash again. I suggest installing a safemode application (search - there are several available).
|
what was the last known today plugin you enabled? just wait and see what happens because this happened to me too and it eventually loaded up.
|
This happened to me this morning too. I did a hard reset and restored a back up from yesterday. I have Sprite backup run every night so I always have a fresh backup ready.
|
Another thread is convinced its from the HTC today plugin. If you need to manually reset they're saying over there to shut off that plugin first.
I also am having this problem and have reloaded WM6 a few times. I'm now ready with my safe mode app (Don't use Ilauncher as it doesn't show the plugins when in safe mode, I'm now using Monocube Safe Mode 2 which shows the plugins and which you can uncheck and restart" and with regular backups. |
Just had to hard reset my WM6 phone. I had my phone plugged in the the computer, it froze while getting an MMS message... I did a soft reset with it still connected to my USB .. then I went into the "stuck in WM6 splash screen" mode... even after 10 or so soft resets and waiting more than 5 mins after each reset.
No problems though, it's worth it to get to play with a new ROM. |
you know, this has happened to me several times, (meaning, even after several hard resets). ...would work fine for a while, then it happens again. This, plus the fact that I can't get my voice command incoming notification to work, I may just have to go back to aku 3.5
|
TinMan, you're saying that it eventually comes back if you wait? Thanks.

HTC Home
The problem is HTC Home Plug-In - member DC has this fix -
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...2925#post82925 This fix worked for me. |

This has happened a few times, but I *think* it's tied to soft resetting while the phone is plugged into the usb port on the computer. Good luck, let us know how you resolve your problem. Tin |
I'm having the same issue but on WM5.
I have a rom I cooked up for me and it works great. I changed it slightly by added fewer programs, and installed it on my wife's phone and a friend's phone, and they both had the WM green screen lock up. My wifes has had it happen 4 times now. Unfortunately, I only saved the nbf file from the ROM I'm running, so it's going to be a little difficult to see what changes I made to their ROM that is causing it. All three phones have the HTC Home plugin. Mine has been running for a month. |
I still have WM5 installed but I have this problem frequently when I have ext_rom hidden. As soon as unhide it in the reg the problem goes away. - sheureka
|
TinMan, I've also felt that it happens more when I'm plugged into the USB port when I've soft resetted. Are you running the HTC customization program? I haven't used it lately and I haven't had the problem either when soft reseting.
I'd love to know if this problem is permanently fixed in the WM6 bugs and fixes or in another forum. |
I've had it happen with and without being plugged into the USB port on the computer, without HTC (I don't use it), with both WM5 & 6. I'm currently cooking all my ROMs without WeatherPanel, as some have speculated that it's a problem. It's only been 2 days, but so far no green screen lockups. It happened to me 4 or 5 times in a two day period late last week. Usually, before it happens, I soft-reset because the phone is acting squirrelly. After the first time is when I decided to give the WM6 load a try. Seemed nice enough, I reloaded all my apps (included WeatherPanel), and life was good.... for a bit, then it acted up. I reset it and poof... it was stuck. I cooked a new version of my WM5 ROM, and as I said, I had it happen several times after that. The last time was yesterday morning. I was getting ready to drive for a business trip, and was setting up my GPS. The alarm on my phone started going off (for no apparent reason, as i have no alarms set for 8am!), but I couldn't stop it, so I reset it and that was all she wrote. I ended up hard-reseting in the van just to get a working phone again.
I'll post back in a few days if I've had no problems. After a week or so, I'll reinstall WP (I do miss it!) and we'll see what happens. Brian |
Im not using any HTC customizations. Like bjhotch I have been using Weatherpanel, but my splash hangs so far are related to being connected via USB and soft resetting...
Hopefully WP isn't the issue! Argh! |
It's been happening to me, too. Twice since yesterday, actually.
After last night's hard reset I removed the HTC plugin from the today screen, as was suggested in previous posts. This morning on the train Opera wouldn't launch, so I did a soft-reset. That was all she wrote. I couldn't get it to boot again until I did a hard reset. One thing I noticed is that it doesn't always freeze on the green screen. Sometimes it freezes on an error screen that says that Windows Live doesn't have a data connection (I sync my Hotmail account). That error frequently comes up during the boot process, but it usually goes away after around a second. Another funny thing I noticed this morning is that Pocket Plus' safe boot couldn't even successfully boot the thing. Once the green screen went away the phone would lock up. Here's my config: WM6 ROM Radio v1.41 Today Plugins: SBSH Pocket Breeze SPB Pocket Plus SPB Phone Suite Voice Command 1.6 (which doesn't announce CID) ExtROM hidden |
i get to waste another afternoon too. wm6, shut off htc home after the last time. i had weatherpanel and o2plus. I'm really starting to think weatherpanel needs to go away. Of course, it's what I use most frequently.
|
I am having this same issue in WM5. I first had thought it was Windows Live Messenger, but now I got a hang and I havent even installed messenger. I had my phone running for about 4 days now and did a soft reset, and got the hang.
Also, I do not have the HTC home plugin installed. |
hard reset, resynced, installed spb pocket plus so I have a safe mode. Phone now only boots into safe mode, normal mode hangs on the win mo screen. awesome.
maybe apple is onto something. |
This is a very funny problem, since we all seem to have different setups.
The good thing is that I can set up my device in about 30 min after all of these hard resets since I'm keeping all of the app install cabs on the SD card. I would love to get to the bottom of this, though. |
Btrcp2000, are you able to go into the today plugins and uncheck HTC Today screen? I wasn't able to when using Ilauncher in safe mode but I was able to download and load Monocube Safe Mode 2 (per an earlier thread, thanks) and install it when in safe mode. http://www.monocube.com/content/view/5/37/
I then was able to get it going, somehow get Monocube's safe mode going and when I did that all of my today plug ins were there and I unchecked it and rebooted. It took a bit of effort but it got me going again. |

I'm surviving without it at the moment, and I've not had any problems. I've soft-reset several times, even reloaded a few times to fix other issues (like Slide2Lock 1.7 not liking SPBTime), but so far so good. I'm going to try and keep this current load going for a while to see if I have any issues. If not, I'll load WP from the CAB and see what happens. |
My test phone did this yesterday running, I soft reset several times with no results, I did a hard reset and still nothing so I just flashed back to Kirvins C&S 3.5 1.02. There was nothing really installed on the WM6 with no mods or regedits. Looks like more bugs to be worked out.

WM6 Start Screen Freeze Fix
I read this in another thread on this board. So far it has fixed my freezing problem for those using WM6 with HTC. Go to the weather panel go to find city name , menu, weather options, uncheck download weather data automatically.
Mine would freeze anytime I did a soft reset and I would have to re-flash but I have reset 6 times since that change with no freezing. Curious if this works for other people. |
Well, I seem to have this happen now and then as well, and I don't use weather panel, the only today plugin I use is the HTC Home.. I don't have a lot of apps installed, so I'm starting to this it just my be the phone, lol.. Ohh I'm running Helmi's WM6...
Luckily, after a hard reset, I'm up and running in about 10 - 15 mintues (thank you SPB Backup, lol) |
@trehouse-
my last freeze on 9/21 was the most disappointing because I had eliminated everything we've discussed here and elsewhere. HTC was already unchecked, and I was not in the process of soft resetting while charging, which I have confirmed will ALWAYS kill my phone. I didn't have any ability to go into safe mode that I knew of anyway. Is it built into helmi's wm6 somewhere? Doesn't matter, I finally caved and got spb backup. @coreyoli- what happens when you activesync after restoring with spb? (assuming you use AS). Do you have to establish a new partnership, or does it duplicate the PIM info with whatever is in outlook? EDIT: Forgot to mention, I've been running smoothly without weatherpanel, although I'm frequently caught without my umbrella. I might try the auto update thing, but I don;t want to mess with my phone for a while. |
Btrcp2000, it sounds like your working through the issue. I haven't had any freezes after a soft boot since I stopped messing with the weather panel custom icons and custom city definition. I dont know if its related or not. I don't know of a safe mode app in Helmi's WM6. Good idea to get the backup app. Will get you back from hell sometime.

it's power related...
|
It's been almost a week since I've had to hard reset my phone after a reboot.
The one thing that I've done differently is NOT install Voice Command 1.6. Previously even with the HTC plug in disabled I had the problem. Raging, what makes you say that it's power related? The last two times it happened to me I was on the train (nowhere near a charger) and the battery was nearly full. |
Well, it's been about 2 weeks since I had to hard reset my phone. So, I just uninstalled PocketWeather and reinstalled WeatherPanel. Guess we'll see what happens....

I've had SIX 6700's all set up in different configs with all the latest flavors of ROMs.
The one common element in freezing upon start has been due to power loss..either directly related or indirectly I don't know. The phone would get low on power (sometimes with an instant drop of power from full to low) and become unstable - sometimes freezing an application or getting sluggish. I would then reboot and it would freeze. Some apps that regularly connect connect to the internet use more power than others and thus they perhaps just appear be causing problems. Those that lose power more often would see issues more often. I rarily have my stylus so I usely remove the battery to reboot. This once caused my phone to no longer charge because the contact points weren't getting a pristine perfect connection (despite appearing as such). Upon cleaning& microadjusting the contacts points it charges again. I've also experienced the issue with the phone freezing upon reboot while usb attached to pc. It is what first made me think the problem wasn't power related. However, there remains a possibility that other factors are involved. I've long speculated that as power diminishes it loses ability to allocate some memory somewhere. So upon restart it then doesn't have enough resources to fully start. For instance, when I design a new ROM that uses too much physical memory it freezes in the exact same way. Tethering might have some impact with this issue in some way as well as other things not yet mentioned. |
I agree with Raging... I have noticed that if i soft reset my phone and the battery is below 20%, I get hung on splash screen. If I give it a full charge on the wall charger, I can do a soft reset with no probs.
There have been times when the phone would hang on a soft reset that I could stick it on the wall charger for about 15 minutes and give it a full charge... then I do a soft reset and get the phone back to the today screen. I too have cooked up a fairly large ROM. |
I think it's definitely a power issue. Since flashing to WM6 life's been great, but today I was watching tv via orb on my xv6700 and late in the day it hung up, and after soft-resetting, it got hung up on the green splash screen, even while plugged in. Booted fine in safe mode but would hang up when trying to do a normal boot. Came home and put in a different, charged battery, and after booting in safe mode, rebooted and it did fine doing a normal boot. Life's good again!!
|
I reinstalled the ROM after the last hard reset. I did not install WeatherPanel - my only additional software. I have been running for 2 weeks without a slow down or hang up on soft reset.
The problems I had experienced before was with my extended battery and the power level way above 20% left when I reset. I would experience slow downs and attempt to soft reset with 80%-90% battery level. I also tried to soft reset with the USB charger connected to phone/laptop and also experienced the hangup at the splash screen. So I am not sure mine was power related. |

It would appear that this power loss anomoly may occur even when the battery is full and is perhaps just a fluctuational loss due to heavy draw from resources.
In other words when you have beams turned on, bt turned on, wifi on, internet downloading, backlight bright, xcpu scaled at 620, and playng music - then you might simulate a power fluctuation in which it doesn't respond to normal memory management. Its just a theory. Lithium Ion battery mechanics is a weird science. I'd like to hear more people come forward that have experimented with alternating different batteries. |
I have had the problem of getting stuck in the splash screen for quite sometime. It did not matter if I had Weather panel on the today screen, or if I stopped the automated updates. It still would get stuck. It also did not matter if my battery was full or not. It still would get stuck. Any way I flashed a rom with the latest kitchen. It booted up flawlessly for a week after every soft reset. Then I had remembered that I had not setup memmaid to clean up my dead registry and temp files, Once I configured it to clean up my registry it showed that I had a bunch of dead shortcuts and bad install files and it deleted them. Subsequently when I did a soft reset, it would get stuck on the splash screen everytime. So then I hard reset the phone, and did multiple soft resets with no problem. Once I configured memmaid to clean the bad registry files, it found a whole bunch again, and the soft reset that followed, got me stuck on the splash screen. I then proceeded to hard reset and I have only used memmaid to clean my IE files, and delete my duplicate notifications and nothing else, and I have had no problems for a week, even with using weatherpanel, and having it set to self update.
In short, I feel that maybe the problem may be occuring with some registry tweaks that are involved in the actual cooking of these roms and that the programs (sktools, memmaid, or whatever other registry cleaning apps that are out there might be recognizing them as foreign and are deleting essential system registry files. |
I had this too
I stupidly deleted the "CannedText" word document, becuase I wasn't aware that it was i a system folder, then when I reset it when changing the dialer, I was stuck at the green screen.
