I use PPCPimBackup.exe to save call history to the storage card and then restore it after flash - works great from 3.5 to 3.5, but not sure if it is compatible between AKUs.

If you are just updating from one 3.x ROM to another, copy \pim.vol to your card, do the flash, copy it back, and soft reset... keeps all your pim data including speed dials and call history - works for me.

it worked good for me.. from 3.5 to wm6. iv done it quite a few times inside wm6 too after hard setting. but sync ur contacts to and make sure u chose to only backup the call history n sms options and not the contacts otherwise u ll get double contacts from activesync and pim. and u shd back up on both and resptore only from one to be doubly sure. good luck.

Pim Backup 2.5 is free.
Many people use it, and I have cooked into every ROM I've made. Works like a charm. I have it scheduled to backup all my PIM data every morning at 6am and save it to the storage card. I set it to keep the last 3 backups incase something gets screwy. http://www.freewareppc.com/database/pimbackup.shtml
