Verizon to Alltel VX6700

I need to apologize in advance. I am a novice to the PPC market. Moved from a Razr and am trying to get my father's old Verizon VX6700 to work on my Alltel account.

1. I took it into Alltel and the lady there said, I can help you this fall when the merger is complete.

2. I called Alltel and she put my ESN in, but then wouldn't help me when the VX6700 refused to dial Alltel to update my phone.

My issue I feel is if I could get it to dial Alltel, I would be able to use it? Sorry I'm a complete greenhorn and any help you can give me I would REALLY appreciate.
