A while back I was checking into an external EVDO brick external antenna. The lady at a local cellular shop told me that the 6700 has a "fragile external antenna connector" and that plugging in an external antenna would actually break the connection with the internal antenna. I thought it sounded like a bunch of BS. Anyone have any info on this?

ya I think your right the internal antenna is no longer functional.
After a bit more searching I found that this is very common (wish I would have read up on it first) I took a 4" piece of wire and plugged it into the external antenna port, now I get a signal. what confused me is that the WiFi works perfectly without the wire. People, DO NOT PLUG IN AN EXTERNAL ANTENNA ON THE PPC-6700 it will more that likely screw up your internal antenna. |

Do you get better reception if you plug something into the Ext. Antenna? I was thinking that if it does... maybe I can take half the case apart in the back and hook up something to it and wrap it around inside the case so it looks like an internal antenna to get better reception. I have issues with reception.

Maybe I am just lucky but I have been using a wilson antenna and adapter for my apache for 6 months now with no problems. It gets plugged in and unplugged at least 8 or 10 times a day. I have learned in the past to make sure I am gentle with it when connecting. I have looked through the hole in the back and it looks like it would be easily replaced or even disassembled and fixed by someone with good surface mount soldering experience. Maybe even hack in a sturdier replacement with a 1ghz rated socket if the stock replacement cannot be obtained? Or as a last resort just remove the plug and solder in a bridge. The plug should, like most cell phones and wifi cards, just be a connector with a built in switch (similar to a headset plug). Even if the phone is capable of knowing if it is plugged in or not, it would just be a simple resistance check. If someone has any hires closeups of the circuit boards of the phone I could look at them and figure out where to put the bridge (i don't want to take mine apart just yet!). But anyone with some basic electronics experience should be able to do the same.

I too use a Wilson antenna and adapter and plug and unplug often. I've never had a problem, but have read many other posts of people connecting an external antenna one time and breaking the internal antenna connection.
