Not sure what went wrong, I rarely install to the SD card since it can cause issues, but when I do, the file is still linked in the start>programs menu. You can also link to it directly by holding tap on the file, select copy, then go to windows>start menu>programs then holding on a clear area, then selecting paste link. This works with resco explorer, not sure about the built in file manager.
The only rule of thumb I can think of about installing programs to the SD card is don't put a program there that needs to run constantly, or that is needed on boot, you can get a false Storage Card folder, and your SD gets moved to Storage Card 2, creating problems with false/dead links. Programs that are used on occasion for specific things can be installed to the SD card.
