Question: Quick backup/restore mail account settings?

Is there a way to quickly backup your POP and IMAP mail account settings?

I know something like SPRITE or SPB backup will likely do it, but I don't think you'd want to restore use one of those if you've just loaded a new ROM.

The PIM Backup utility included in the new kitchen and previous Cornel ROMs is great, but it doesn't restore the settings.

I've searched the forums and can't find an answer.

Thanks!

I have actually tried to find a way to do this, but cannot for POP3 accounts. It is possible for exchange accounts, but I have yet to find a way to do it for POP3. This doesnt mean it is not possible, but I just havent found it myself yet. Check out MSDN and the xmls for setting up provisional upgrades.

All the account settings are stored in the registry, so in theory one can create a CAB file or OEM package for the kitchen to restore them.

Using Sprite backup you could do a backup of only your email. Then the restore only restores email and not the stuff you don't want restored from the system.

Care to do our homework and tell us what all keys are needed, or even save them out for us, and make an oem that we just need to edit the .rgu with our info? Then you'd be my new hero.

I was thinking the same thing regarding the reg settings. I have 3 accounts set up using IMAP, but it shouldn't matter that much whether it's IMAP or POP3.

Since I've been not much help around here to this point, I will see what I can come up with as my contribution to the cause.

I will let you know if I come up with anything.

So far, not much... Total Commander's registry search leaves something to be desired. I haven't found any registry keys yet that appear to be what we are looking for, but they have to be there somewhere.

Or, is is possible that it's not a registry key we are looking for after all, but rather some form of metabase? I went through Application Data and didn't find anything there either...

I'll keep you posted.

what ever happened to that method of where you can make a .cab file that restores your exchange account info so that you dont have to enter it all over again every time you hard reset?

One suggestion would be to Hard Reset, dump the reg to a file, then setup your accounts and do another reg dump. THen do a File Compare on the two to see what if anything changed.

I haven't done the registry compare yet, but I did go through with a medium-tooth comb. I'm not convinced that the account information is actually in the registry.

Does anyone here know anything about *.vol files? I found two in the root that look promising: "cemail.vol" and "pim.vol". I have a feeling that, because of the filesize, they are the actual content (messages, etc) and not the settings, but I can't say for sure because the cemail.vol file appears to be locked. I can't open it, can't copy it, can't even copy it to my computer via ActiveSync.

If anyone has any luck opening the cemail.vol file in a text editor, and if it looks promising, please let us know.
