GPS line mapping for woods / hiking....

There is so much GPS stuff on the internet and I'm a bit tired skimming through all the apps to find what I'm looking for so I figured I might just ask here.

I have an IBlue GPS receiver and TOMTOM Navigator 5.

BUT - I want a program (for my 6700) that will make a line everywhere I go on the map so that I can then "retrace" my steps in the woods.

Just something simple, and freeware would be ideal.

GPS "tracks"

What you are looking for is software that allows you to save "tracks" from your GPS. If you want it to display on maps on the PPC, you will likely have to pay. Mapping software tends to be very expensive.

You might want to look into BeelineGPS. I tried it when I first started geocaching. It isn't freeware, but it isn't very expensive. It does allow you to export tracks to KML files. You can load these files into Google Earth, or online at GPSvisualizer and see where you've been on the map.

I know there are a few freeware geocaching programs for the PPC. I am not sure if they allow you to save/export tracks or not. If I find anything, I will post back here.

Edit: One other program to check out is BackCountry Navigator. It allows you to use freely available topographical maps, and plot your tracks on the PPC. It also allows you to export tracks in GPX format. This is readable in a lot of mapping programs (including Google Earth and GPSVisualizer) Same price as BeelineGPS, but looks like more features.

I just re-read your original post, and now realize that you want to "backtrack" along the same path when in the woods. In that case, ignore what I said about saving and exporting to Google Earth. You won't be doing that in the woods! But cool to map where you've been once you are back home...

Thank you perfeng, this is perfect.

The others are good as well, but when you have "the sickness", when it comes down to it - it's really hard to settle for less than the best.
