screen keeps turning on for no reason... any idea?

hey guys,
whenever i press the "on" button on the top of the phone sto turn the screen off, the screen keeps turning back on automatically time to time. is it suppose to do that? if not any idea as to how i can have it turned off until i get a call or alarm?
