How To: Using your 6700 as a USB modem for your computer.

2 Attachment(s)
So you have this killer phone with this killer connection speed to the internet using EVDO but you have to navigate all your favorite sites using the small screen. Don't get me wrong, I love the screen on the 6700, but there are web-sites I avoid going to when I am on my phone. WellI no longer need to worry about such a thing.

FYI: I learned this from another guy I was talking to about setting this up and there is a document in the accompanying zip file that he wrote up including screenshots with each step.

Requirements:
1. Before setup an CDMA USB Modem you must verify that you have two files:
?CDMA USB Modem.INF? (The inf contained in the zip file works as well "CDMA1X_USBMDM.INF)
?CDMA USB Modem Dialer.exe?

2. You MUST disable Active Sync! (Ctrl+Shift+Esc --> Processes Tab --> End the processes beginning with wce*)

Installation and Usage

1. On Windows Mobile: Tap Start->Programs->Wireless Modem
2. Select ?USB? as the connection type, and then press the ?Start? button.
3. Connect your Windows Mobile with Desktop PC by USB cable/cradle.
4. On Desktop PC, new hardware will be found. Select ?No, not this time? and press ?Next?
5. Select ?Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)? and press ?Next?
6. Press ?Browser? to specific the folder which contain the ?CDMA USB Modem.INF?, and then press ?Next?
7. Press ?Continue Anyway?
8. Press ?Finish? to complete ?CDMA USB Modem? driver installation.
9. After installation you have a new USB Modem called ?CDMA USB Modem? in Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options
10. Run the application ?CDMA USB Modem Dialer.exe? and then press ?Dial? to make the data connection leaving the user name and password blank.

Once it's all installed here are the shortened steps to get the modem up:

1. On Windows Mobile: Tap Start->Programs->Wireless Modem
2. Select your connection type, and then press ?Start? button
3. Connect your Windows Mobile with Desktop PC by USB cable/cradle
4. Open the application ?CDMA USB Modem Dialer.exe?
5. Then press ?Dial?

If this does not work for you, please feel free to contact me.

Hope this is useul for some of you.

Thanks for updating, that is good to know.

Wideawake 05-30-2006 03:38 AM

I was wondering because I know when I tether via bluetooth I dont have to enter any info. Edited the first post to reflect no username or password.

Very detailed write-up. Thanks Rufus. This is a must have for every ppc users, IMHO. :wav:

cac9478 05-30-2006 03:02 PM

Now I wonder how you do it through IRDA. Nice write up by the way the speeds are so much faster on usb then bluetooth.

Rufus 05-30-2006 05:04 PM

I have yet to perform any speed tests... but yeah, it's quick. Windows was reporting a connection speed of 230 kbps, but I know that this rarely reflects what your actual speed is. I will run some tests soon and report back.

Wideawake 05-30-2006 07:55 PM

I understand bluetooth is slow, but I don't live in an evdo area, so bluetoothing the 1x connection vs usb are around the same speeds.

Big D5 06-15-2006 08:49 PM

WOW

This is the best thing ever. I have wondered if this was possible. I am using it right know. Great right up follow the instructions and it worked the first try.

pzztgotbagz 06-19-2006 01:14 PM

hey mike u forgot to update the first post it still says enter username and pass under step 5. just letting ya know

Wideawake 06-19-2006 01:24 PM

Thanks for letting me know, didnt catch that the first time. :thumbleft:

wingzero 06-20-2006 08:46 AM

Yeah, tested it this weekend and it worked like a charm on first try. And the speed is amazing. Now I'll see if sprint will send a bill for it. :D

bunnytrigger 06-26-2006 11:02 PM

do i really need the craddle for this???? can i just not use the usb cable??? just wondering...i wanna kwno before i take on a trip with it. .......and do i have to have actyvesyn installed?? just wondering if it will recognize the device without the craddle or actyvesyn beign installed...

wingzero 06-27-2006 07:59 AM

I just use the usb cable. If I remember correctly, I think activesync will turn off when you start the usb modem dialer.

bunnytrigger 06-27-2006 06:00 PM

well, i figured it out. It didnt work without the activesync installed on it, sadly the cd has the drivers needed to operate the phone with the pc..........unless i did something wrong. I do understand u say the activesync turns off WHEN u have them installed

Big D5 06-27-2006 08:57 PM

My favorite trick

This is My favorite trick to show so I do it all the time. When you turn on the phone as a modem in the PPC thin connect, the activesync wont start. The drivers you installed in your computer will let the computer recognize the PPC as a modem then you run the dialer program. That is it, I get 270 kbps in my area.

bunnytrigger 06-27-2006 09:19 PM

i saw that :P i just think it would be neat if u didnt have to.. Like in my situation, i didnt have a way to transter the files to the actual pc hard drive to install them. But i see waht u are saying

Fees for using 6700 as a modem

Does Sprint charge and additional fee other than minutes if you use the 6700 as a modem?

Wideawake 07-03-2006 10:30 PM

I have used mine as a modem for awhile, with no charges.
~mike

wingzero 07-04-2006 12:35 AM

Yeah, if you don't go wild with it, you'll be ok. I've used many times and didn't get charge for it.

alohaHTC 07-05-2006 12:41 AM

Anyone looking to do this in Linux has had a rough time ... until now!

billing

I just followed those instructions and got mine hooked up, works great. But just one question will Sprint bill me for this usage? has anyone gotton a bill? or can sprint tell that we have a connection. I hate sprint, personally thought when I bought the phone that this modem worked to dail up any internet provider of my choise. When I called sprint they said I needed to signup for an additional plan that cost 39.95 a month in addition to my existing plan. Sprint sucks !!

Wideawake 07-06-2006 12:47 AM

no no no please dont say that. Sprint rules  , where else can u even get a data package for 15 dollars???? ummm no where, verzion charges u like 35, not sure to be exact. no i havent been charged for any tethering. shoot my plan is like 42 after tax with alot of free goodies.
~mike

bunnytrigger 07-06-2006 12:56 AM

if you abuse the tethering you are more likely to get caught, if you just use it now and then , it should be no problem. :)

Cingular's data package for having a data card with unlimitited aceess is around 80 dollars, tax and hardware excluded, and that is with a data card. It is more with a cell phone as a modem. Our 6700 is able to stream A LOT before it raises any flags of being used as a modem without having to have the "additional plan" that you believe to be expensive. Alltel offers that same access for around 100 dollars. I happen to check everytime that i use it as a modem and I have transfered close to 1GB in one day of use with no extra charges so far.......Sprint doesn't suck so bad if you really think about it. Just make sure you research before jumping into conclusions that could cause you to lose into many good things that are out there.

And if there is ever any questions, feel free to PM anybody in this forums, we sure dont mind helping each other at any time :)

Rufus 07-06-2006 05:41 PM

I doubt that they are going to catch you... I have been using this pretty heavily... Including connecting to my company and remoting into my PC at work. I am sure that if anything was going to draw too much bandwidth, it would be that or downloading music or something. I think that having this phone, they expect some users to do this, since the modem program is included in the programs of the initial install (at least for the upgraded ROM).

Big D5 07-06-2006 09:09 PM

How would they know

I have used this heavily for the last couple of weeks and I haven't seen any charges. How would they even know, doesn't the data transfer look like your regular cell data transfer. You are singing on the same way that you wood if you were just using PIE how would Sprints system be able to tell that you are using a laptop

xclusiv_1 07-09-2006 06:13 AM

WOW just set this up like 3 minutes ago and the CONNECTION IS FAST!!!! thanxs to everyone who contributed to figuring this out

p0ww0ww0w 07-25-2006 09:16 PM

i was able to connect with the usb but i couldnt figure out how to connect with bluetooth could someone help!? thanks!

pzztgotbagz 07-25-2006 09:25 PM

i found this out because i tried to use my phone as a modem on my wifes laptop and whatever usb bluetooth dongle he has does not support dun only filesharing and a few other things i went home and connected to my motorola usb dongle and there was the connection to use the phone as a modem.so not only does the phone have to support dun but so does the computer ur connecting it to .....

p0ww0ww0w 07-25-2006 10:45 PM

i got it to work! my bluetooth adapter worked! i got it along with an adapter for my printer. haah thanks

bunnytrigger 07-31-2006 01:37 AM

ya know, i just had the hardest time connecting to the internet with the usb....it kept giving me remote errors. After like 5 tries it connected, but it was weird.

Rufus 07-31-2006 12:43 PM

Yeah, it can be a little tricky. I lost my modem drivers on my laptop somehow, so I had to reinstall them. It took me about 5 tries to get on yesterday.

..... I forgot to turn off active sync, then forgot to start them modem before connecting to my PC, then after I got everything done in the correct order, I was able to connect.

This is one of those things that works well if you use it a lot, but you forget the steps if you are not using it on a regular basis.

Big D5 07-31-2006 10:35 PM

What I would like to know is if there is a hack for keeping phone calls from interrupting when I am using my phone as an EVDO connection

xclusiv_1 07-31-2006 11:29 PM

question... I was using this the other day and got this error message maybe about 5 or 6 different tims.."DATA CALL FAILURE. ERROR CODE: 1010. DATA SERVICE IS NOT AVAILABLE WHEN DEVICE IS IN TETHERED & BLUETOOTH DIAL UP NETWORKING MODE"... anyone knows what that means?

yes, there is. you can trade your old 6700 for my new one and your problems and my problems will be solved. in the new 6700s phone calls do not interrupt evdo sessions, but i want mine to! i broke my old one, they sent me a new one, now i cannot get calls when i'm using my evdo connection! this is true for any ppc6700 manufactured after april 1 2006. i'm considering getting a 700p (oops did i say that word here?) for that reason alone. i'm so pee-d off about this.

ajk511 08-03-2006 10:45 AM

i thought someone said all the new ev-do phones were going to be like this, even the 700p. oh well. 2wyce, go check ur local sprint store for an old one, thats what i did. made the rep do ##786# on a few phones to find one with a pre april manufacture date. then swap it out at the store. i was having legit probs with my other one so swapping wasnt a big issue, but if you have to make up some crap abou the BT or the battery and get that old one.

wingzero 08-03-2006 11:18 PM

If you going to swap it out for an older one at the store, it's probably a refurbish. I would rather get a brand new one. If the call is that important, they will call back.

Wideawake 08-04-2006 01:04 AM

wingzero the brand new ones can't do evdo and calls at the same time. ;)

i was expecting a refurb to, but surprizingly both the sprint stores by my house have a large number of ppc with pre april manufacture date that arent refurbs. new in box. maybe its just by me.
