You're lucky. I am surprised that they still had pre-April phones available. May be not many people use the ppc at your location. What you need to do is encourage all your friends and relatives to use this phone and had them join us here. :D

xclusiv, sorry didn't even see that ?.....when are u getting the error?
|
I used today with no problem.
|
don't get me wrong it works perfectly...but as I'm surfing I tend to get that message, maybe like after 30 minutes or so... i'm thinking its b/c my aol email is setup to check every 60 min. and it tries to check it while I'm teethering
|
well there ya go solving ur own problem. hehe yea I have found that I need to turn off my direct push or I have problems with connecting and the connection. adjust the settings and see what happens. I bet that's it.
~mike |
Wow... this worked like a charm. I'm using my PC now :D.
|
is there any way to teether using the wifi on the phone?
|
haha I knew the ? would araise soon, and I have been looking into it. As far as I know its possible, and I think u use pocketputty. I can't seem to figure it out tho...the reason I'm almost 100% sure its possible is because I read where one ppc had wifi and a group of ppc owners shared the one persons wifi connection via bluetooth with the rest. if anyone knows speak up, and if I find anything I will let ya know.

Just a data point - I actually needed this today, so I set it up for both USB and bluetooth - once again great info @ ppcgeeks
Speed results are pretty sweet for both: using dslreports.com for speed test speakeasy bluetooth: http://www.dslreports.com/im/17979331/11428.png speakeasy USB: http://www.dslreports.com/im/17980198/81075.png Not exactly 6M DSL, but it will do in a pinch :D |
thanks for this great info... keep it up
|
i can only get up to 260kbps (max) when teethering, but when i use pdanet i get 2.4mbps anyone know why?
|
it has been stated that that's not ur actual speed, check it with dslreports bet u get the same speed. ;)

Nice writeup, thanks. I was receiving an "com open error" initially, and after a hard reset everything seems to be working fine. Thanks.
|
Many Thanks for the Tutorial...
Thanks from a 6700 newbie - to both the thread OP and zip file (& accompanying document) creator. Nice and clear explanation on how to get the modem going quickly!

Thank you for posting the instructions for doing this. Although I did use your instructions as a start I had a different encounter during my installation. I take no credit for the information i am writing here. I only complied it in my attempt to to get modem tethering to work. These instructions were used on my Verizon XV6700.
O ** = Original Instructions By Rufus M ** = Modified Instructions/Comments O ** 1: On Windows Mobile: Tap Start->Programs->Wireless Modem M ** Wireless Modem is actually an EXE called wmodem.exe. Initially i could not find this because it was hidden. Regardless, In my search to find this exe file I searched for instructions on reinstalling. As a result, I came across the instructions to Enable the WMODEM & DUN. Instructions as Follows: 1. Go to the PHONE application 2. ##3328873 3. enter code 000000 4. Select BT DUN 5. Click Edit 6. Choose enable 7. Select WMODEM 8. Click Edit 9. Choose enable 10. Push Save / OK 11. Push Ok 12. Follow the prompt to restart your device **copy paste from another site. Now back to find WModem. At this point i still could not find this application. As a result i reconnect my Apache to Active Sync and browsed to the \windows\ directory. Where i went to tools and show all hidden files. After finally finding it I Copied and Pasted the shortcut link to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs. I disconnected my Apache from the USB Cable and disabled Active Sync. This was done using a program called "DisconnectActiveSync." Of which i cant link cause i am a n00b. Finally on my Apache I went to Start>Programs>WModem O ** 2. Select 'USB' as the connection type, and then press the 'Start' button. M ** Worked as Instructed. O ** 3. Connect your Windows Mobile with Desktop PC by USB cable/cradle. M ** Worked as instructed O ** 4. On Desktop PC, new hardware will be found. Select 'No, not this time' and press 'Next' M ** Worked as Instructed O ** 5. Select 'Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)' and press 'Next' M ** Worked as Instructed 6. Press 'Browser' to specific the folder which contain the 'CDMA USB Modem.INF', and then press 'Next' M ** Nope, failed gloriously. After hours of searching and researching the solution to make the INF file work for me was to Edit the INF file with the Device ID. The only way I could get the ID was the finish the installation by hitting Finish and not installing any drivers. I then went in Windows to **Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager> **Double Click on the Yellow Exclamation Under Modem **Click on Details **Copy the Line USB\Vid_045E&PID_0079 **Open the file CDMA1X_USBMDM.INF **Under Section [HTC] Replace: '= Modem1, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_00CF' '= Modem1, USB\VID_045E&PID_0079F' At this point I Disconnected my Apache & Reconnected. And we continue from the New Hardware Wizard Instructions: Attempt #2 O ** 4. On Desktop PC, new hardware will be found. Select 'No, not this time' and press 'Next' M ** Worked as Instructed O ** 5. Select 'Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)' and press 'Next' M ** Worked as Instructed O ** 6. Press 'Browser' to specific the folder which contain the 'CDMA USB Modem.INF', and then press 'Next' M ** Worked as Instructed O ** 7. Press 'Continue Anyway' M ** Worked as Instructed O ** 8. Press 'Finish' to complete 'CDMA USB Modem' driver installation. M ** Worked as Instructed O ** 9. After installation you have a new USB Modem called 'CDMA USB Modem' in Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options M ** Worked as Instructed O ** 10. Run the application 'CDMA USB Modem Dialer.exe' and then press 'Dial' to make the data connection leaving the user name and password blank. dial: #777 M ** Not quite. I had to add the following: User Name: [10DigitCellPhone#here]@vzw3g DOT com Password: vzw Dial: #777 **copy paste from another website 2 Very Important Things to Remember: *YOU MUST DISCONNECT ACTIVE SYNC *YOU MUST NOT HAVE AN ACTIVE DATA CONNECTION Hopefully this is helping and doesnt confuse anyone. Regardless, I had a hell of a time getting to work. It does work now. But with my modified instructions. Happy Tethering. |

I have tried this every which way, but no luck.
For some reason my XP laptop is detecting the xv6700 as "generic serial (PROTOTYPE--Remember to change idVendor)" and not a CDMA modem. Since it is not recognising the device as a modem, I cannot install the drivers for it. I do have WModem running and started on the device when I try this. If I do not start the WModem app, the device connects as "Local area connection 4" at 10.0 mbps. I am totaly lost on this. I know this is my first post here, but I am hoping someone can help me out. Thanks |

Thankyou for the excellent reply! I am going to try it out just to see if it works, however I found another solution to tethering by using the Internet sharing app. So far, the sharing app has allowed me to connect via my BT connection and has been plenty fast.
Even though it is working this way, I am very curious to solve the problem in the way you describe. Thanks again. |
Doesn't work on a Mac (of course)
Yea yea I know, "Who cares about Mac". Well, I used to think that way until they came out with Macs that have Intel processors, and my company decided to make me use one.
Anyone get this working on a Mac or am I going to have to be the pioneer here? -GB |
Winmodem INF driver file not recognized?
2 Attachment(s)
I downloaded the two files, read the directions about 4-5 times, followed them to a T and on my laptop running win XP it says that "the specified location does not contain information about your device" I know I have the correct .inf file and I am starting the connection on the device before connecting the USB, the laptop sees the connection in device manager. I am currently running Helmi's AKU 3.5 ROM. What piece of the puzzle am I missing here? I know I am very close, but something doesn't add up. Help?!
Interestingly enough, I also downloaded Sprints connection manager with phone as modem after this did not work and it would not even recognize that the phone was connected. I tried active sync off/on, win modem off on. No help. **UPDATE** I followed part of Legacy's directions above and edited the .inf driver file. It now works fine, and man it is way faster than I expected! I was expecting dial-up speeds, but its much closer to DSL! I've uploaded the edited file for the rest of you noobs like me that find programming a daunting task. Please note if you are a Sprint user and you read Legacy's post, there is no need to provide username and password as he did. Just leave them blank. |
Legacyone,
When you saved the modified inf file, what type of file did you save it as? It's only letting me save it as a text file. DeadlyAP1, When I used the BM 3.3, my laptop also said "(PROTOTYPE--Remember to change idVendor)" but it still installed the driver I'm using the 3.5 ver 1.02 rom and having no luck installing the driver on my laptop even though it worked with the BM 3.3 rom |
I have given up on the whole wmodem way. Internet sharing program works much better and is easier to set up/use anyway.
Personally, I would like to know how to solve this problem with the drivers, but I have spent enough time on it as is for a mute issue now. |

Windows 2K Pro Modem issue
Can someone please help me with this one? I have tried enabling & disabling NETBEUI on the client machine but to no avail. The only setting I could see that was different on this machine vs. my XP machine is that this one does not have anything to check under enable netbios over TCP/IP. The driver is properly installed, Activesync is off. The client computer even dials the modem in the phone, then this pops up. Sooo close.. help!

I get this weird error when installing the driver. Looks like everything is okay, then the XP Pro puter says: Windows cannot install the modem.
Then at the "Finish" screen of the add hardware wizard it says: Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key. Sounds like a registry issue, tried searching my registry but didn't find anything promising. Anyone have any ideas? |
