Probably the stupidest Raging Idiot question ever.... but,

I'm feeling lazy, and I didn't readily find an answer in a search or in the manual....

So... when you take the battery out does the phone turn off?

hahha...Just kidding.. Actually, I'm trying to figure out what the extra slot behind the battery is for. Probably a simple question, but a simple search didn't provide an answer.

Looks kind of like a spot for a RUIM (or SIM) card, doesn't it

well not to be pedantic, but I think it's for a RUIM, which is essentially the CDMA equivalent of SIM cards on GSM (as another poster above hinted at). This chassis design was never used for anything but the Apache, but HTC probably designed the casing to accomodate a RUIM reader in case the device was picked up by any carriers that use RUIM (Asia).

Ok, great, now I can add a couple more words to my vocab. That is if they'll stick this time after surely looking them up unknown number of times in the past.

We have -

RUIM: Removable User Identity Module
(which incidentally stands for bad and ruined in Portuguese http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ruim)

And pedantic:
1. ostentatious in one's learning.
2. overly concerned with minute details or formalisms, esp. in teaching.

btw- I don't feel so bad about "pedantic" seeing it wasn't in a couple dictionaries and webster is a bit off. lol
Dictionary.com is my new source as of right now...
