Headphone Issues

I am having a problem. When i insert a headphone into the jack, it doesn't work quite right unless i push it to the side and hold it. I've had this happen to many electronic gizmos in the past, but never knew how to fix it. Does anyone out there know how to fix this? And please, try to exclude the word "toothpick" from your response.
