Verzion 6700 - Alternative Charging methods?

Hi,

I have a broken 6700 - the USB port was apparently shoved into the unit to the point that it cant sync or charge. This was given to me to play with. It can work when another charged battery is placed inside it.

I was also given the refurb replacement that my wife wants to use as her 700w replacement phone (I bought both for 70). The refurb was never used (the woman bought a blackberry).

Anyway, I have been using the broken 6700 was a wifi device in the house (sits next to my bed), but of course the battery does die over time. I have been stealing my wifes battery (she isnt happy about the 'lousy' battery life - due to me).

I looked on ebay & was hoping to find a charger that would allow you to put the battery inito the charger & plug the whole thing into the wall

The Treo 700wx desktop charger has a spot for a spare battery to charge at the same time as charging the phone. I am hoping to find some sort of solution.

The only option I have now is the battery swap (which she isnt liking to much).

Any ideas?

Didn't any of your devices come with the cradle? You can charge a battery in there.

Is there a spot to take a spare battery out & charge it, or does the cradle rely on the USB to be working?

I have no accessories (just one wall charger for the working refurb).

The front is for the phone but you said your USB is broken on the phone so that is a no go. The back slot is for a spare battery (bare) to charge. This is how it looks:

The cradle has the miniUSB connector so you can either use the USB-miniUSB cord to plug into a computer to charge or the AC plug-miniUSB cord to plug into a wall socket. Pick up some spare batteries. There are also posts on where to get the miniUSB connectors and how to open the phone to fix stuff. Don't know how adventurous you are. LOL.

Edit: Just looking at my cradle and documentation. You have to use the AC plug to charge with the cradle, so might want to invest in another one of those.

You have inspired me to order the part & give the usb replacement route a try. That would be much better (if it works). I ordered the part from mouser & will let you know how it goes.

Good Luck. But I disavow any knowledge of this action. LOL. Hope it is Mission "Possible". Really, just offering your options. You might try PMing PPCFreaks to give you some pointers (USERCP tab at top). I'm sure he would help or maybe he will chime in.

I have done 3 of the USB fixes so far. All working very well.

I ordered the USB ports from Mouser (google).

Good quality soldering gun, steady hand and lots of paitence and it will work. Don't get in a rush, that's when the 'pooh' will hit the fan and you end up with a fried mainboard due to excessive heat (speak from experience on that one; first usb port fix was on a main board that had issues with the radio, so didn't really hurt anything).
