PPCGeeks Unified ROM Project: Project Updates

To all fellow chefs and wanna be chefs: I figured everyone may or may not be wondering that is happening for the Unified ROM Project Team. So I am starting this thread the post news about where the developers are at and how the QA testing is going.

To the developers on the project: Feel free to post your thoughts here. No need to. When I get time, I will add replies to update the masses on your progress.

To everyone else: You can book mark this thread or add a reply to subscribe to it. I would advise that this is not the place to ask questions. I will only be providing status updates, as I am not the best person to answer any questions.

Lastly, please do not add post after post asking about updates. As everyone else is as well, I can be very busy from time to time. When there is something to report, I will be sure that the users of this forum know as soon as I possible can.

The bugs fixed by this release:

Foundation:
Bug 3: Missing shortcuts in the Start Menu
Bug 4: Pocket MSN help file in \Windows\Helps?
Bug 7: The ROM kitchen should contain the .NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP3

Infrastructure:
Bug 14: default.hv and user.hv in the ROM kitchen has bogus values?

User Interface:
Bug 2: Inconsistent theme in AKU 3.5
Bug 6: Sounds not visible in notifications
Bug 8: ROM shouldn't be tied so closely to PPCGeeks

Additional Notes:

• The initial setup wizard does not implement timezones with the 2007 Daylight Savings Time. As a result, after a hard reset, go into Settings\System\Clock & Alarms once in order to set the timezone properly. (Reference: bug 12)
• Bluetooth PAN has not yet been fixed in this release. We plan upon implementing a broader fix than that which has currently been found. (Reference: bug 9, bug 10)

Potential issues remaining:

• .NET CF versus .NET CF 2: According to this page, .NET CF 2 is now the default version shipped as of AKU 3.0. So it's probably not a problem that we ship .NET CF2 in addition to .NET CF in our ROM.
• According to that page, Modem Link has, in fact, been deprecated. So we can probably remove it completely.
• 3/8/2007: Numerous people have indicated problems attempting to run Wireless Modem. One involves the "COM OPEN ERROR" problem (issues duplicating the error?). The other involves not being able to run Wireless Modem under certain circumstances, and needing a soft reset to re-enable it (referenced by JBabey here, and I've hit the problem myself as well, although I need to find out how to reproduce).
• 3/8/2007: Bluetooth PAN is still an issue. There appear to be conflicting reports on whether or not PAN works or not (performing a quick Internet search). Menneisyys wrote up an article expalining the change in the dial-up networking model changes in AKU 3.x. For Windows Vista, there's an article explaining how to connect to a Bluetooth PAN. It would be nice if we could find a device where Bluetooth PAN does work, and determine whether or not the DLLs there are usable or not. According to Menneisyys' article, certauin Himalaya, Universal, and Wizard ROMs have Bluetooth PAN support.
• 3/8/2007: A shortcut to the Camera is missing. Other shortcuts may be missing as well, so somebody should load the official AKU 2.x ROM to ascertain which ones are actually missing.

ROM Kitchen 1.0.0.10 Release Candidate 1 is currently being tested by project users. Programs can now be installed properly, and the Favorites button in Pocket Internet Explorer performs as expected.

	Address a problem with the kitchen, where the ROM requires that certain files require the +s +r +h flags, otherwise it begins acting strangely (such as refusing to allow .cab file installations). Since it's not desirable to have the actual kitchen files have any of those attributes (as it would make development more difficult), apply those flags before .nka assembly.

	Add msvcr71.dll, which is used as part of the toolchain. Since it's not shipped with base XP, rather than having somebody potentially need to track it down, add it as part of the tree.

ROM Kitchen 1.0.0.8 Release Candidate 1 is currently being tested by users. Please note that this is not a copy that is stable for users to start cooking. This is simply a release candidate. Below is a copy of the change log provided by Sogarth.

	1. Fix speed dial on .\OS. This replaced the phca*.dll's that enable the speed dial button.
	2. Changes to the CBOW directory that make the dialer pad "consistent" by color.

Great Idea, I've been trying to keep up and this is a one stop shop for me to do it. Would it be over bearing to post reminders here of fixes to include in the new version?
If not I just noted a post that fixes the auto complete in aku 3.5 pr 1.2 pre2.

Thanks for keeping us updated and thanks everyone for working on this project!

I've been looking forward to replacing my phone for over a year now but with AKU 3.5 my rush has diminished (along with the sad realiztion my only option of "updating" to the 6800). If WM6 becomes available for the 6700, I may just get that and pray that Sprint offers something more advanced than the 6800 soon.

The password is not being to the general public, since it is not stable enough for release. Once the kitchen is stable for a release, it is my understanding that the kitchen will be posted for all to use once it has passed testing.

As far as testing, the are a few threads out there in the past few weeks "recruiting" people for this.

Thanks for the info. I did volunteer for testing on one of the threads but if they have enough people, I'm happy to wait.
