Backup Battery

I was thinking of constructing a backup battery for my 6700 useing recharables or AA's maybe 9v's (hasn't arrived yet, but I'm already thinkning) I would use it mostly on plane trips or just in case I can't charge my phone for some reason. Anyways what does the 6700 draw when its chargeing off of usb, any more then 5v 500ma? Also could you switch batteries while power is applied to the USB port? Has anyone made one of these before?

Well, you could do that (and it has the advantage of using off-the-shelf batteries, but one of these is fairly cheap and looks and works great!

After looking at the pic in your link I'm going to question the idea of trying to take one of those on an airplane.

I was thinking of putting it into a project box from radioshack, hopefully that would make it less sketchy looking. I also plan on useing it while I am actually flying (I'm working on my CFI and CFII) since that sucks your batteries being that far away from the towers, but still in range.

Anyone have any idea what kind of current one of these draws while charging and in just normal use? It looks like there are 2 ways to get 5v's, with a 9v regulated down to 5v, and 3v's (2 AA's) boosted up to 5v. 9v is quick easy and cheap, but surpriseingly the 2 AA method is much more powerful, however about twice the cost and complexity.
