Yes, you would have to update the rom to get the app to update.

Yes, but with the ease of the rom kitchen, it really isn't that hard to update apps\roms. That is, unless you are intalling apps that are constantly updated.

I thought we were able to copy files "on top" of the ROM files. This means that if the file is deleted the old version would still remain, but I thought this recognized the new file. The best example of this i can think of is Helmi's patch for the bluetooth problems with AKU 3.3 and 3.5. This would make me think upgrading without redoing the rom is possible. The only problem is then it would take up storage memory, but this would happen if it wasn't in the rom anyway.
Please correct me if i am misunderstanding something. |

I'd agree with ImCoKeMaN about it copying over the file, and just taking some extra space. The problem I see, though, is that when building a ROM, you move all your files to the Windows dir. Since the upgrade is going to expect the files to be somewhere else, I could see you having some problems doing an upgrade to a program.

This does make sense, but reinstalling should change all the related REG entries to point to the new location when it installs. I would think that in general it should work, but there could be cases where it doesn't. The way i see it you can always build everything into the rom and then if you find an update for a program that you need just install the cab. If it works great you just use the program memory like you would if it wasn't in the rom. If not though you could potentially remove it from the kitchen and try again, but this wouldn't be my first choice. Either way though (even if the cab didn't work) it could be made into an OEM and built into your next kitchen ROM.
EDIT: Oh yeah problems with the upgrade program itself would still be possible. if the cab is looking for a specific file before it does the update or something to check the old version that could cause an issue. Not sure how many WM5 programs act like this though. I think even the VC1.6 just creates an updated CAB which does the full install. |

Yeah.....I was just trying to avoid the hard reset. Maybe once I get my kitchen finished (hopefully in the next week) I'll try updating on of the programs in ROM to see what happens.
