Surely there has to be an easier way (BT usage)

Here is my setup:
Sprint ppc-6700 running helmi_c's 3.3 with a junkfree extrom
I have VC1.6 installed
I have a Bt headset that takes ~3 seconds to pair up

So in my daily usage I have a silent.wav ring tone set and VC set to announce incoming calls, I really like this audio caller id. However I can't wear my headset all day, so leave my BT radio on, but not paired, so the announcements come over the phone's speaker, and then I try to pair it real fast and answer before it rolls to voicemail; at best I lose this race about a 2/3rds of the time. (and if the call is one I can't miss I just give up and answer via the phone)

I am told there is no way to have a headset paired but still have the phone ring through it's own speaker, But there has to be some sort of work around or something? I mean I know "normal" cellphones can ring through the handset and then be answered via the headset, why can't the 6700?

Or am I jsut missing some basic operation of the phone?
