Original extrom?

How does one get an original carrier's extrom image?
The carrier's update comes as one big exe, so the RUU and the images are bundled. Trying to run it again to get my extrom back (to later reflash to my own cooked ROM) does not work. Is there a way to unbundle an .nbf from the updater?
