Colonel's Custom 3.3 Rom

Well, since there is no football this weekend, I guess I will give you guys something else to do.

First, thanks to Helmi_c for giving us this rom. Thanks to Mike for giving us the tools and instructions to edit roms. Also, thanks to Faria at xda for helping me with .NET CF 2.0.

So, here is what you get:

Total Commander
Dict Editor
removed Voice dialer and reg entries and links
removed T9 foreign languages
fixed smartdialer reg entry
fix pic&video app hang (Swap dll names)
insert flashlight
Sonny and Greatnate's regedits
Change AKU number
Added Crossbow .tsk and sounds
Added buzzer
disabled SMS sent notification
GRPS timer and disconnect button
disable animations
Change PIE Homepage
increase ring volume
Insert TCPMP
insert O2 Plus
Change theme to Crossbow (was not able to get it to boot to this theme on initial hard reset)
Fix Phone app buttons
insert Green theme
Install .NET CF 2.0 :D (Extra special thanks to Faria at xda-developers.com for helping with this one.)
insert OnLock (Thanks JKingGrim)
insert ppc-6700 (Thanks Blade2032)
insert task Manager
Insert Live Search
Add Mark all as read and Delete all to messaging (think I am missing a reg entry so its not working right now)
Add Save as First Last in contacts

Note: The MMS, BT Dun\Pan, and SD .dll issues have not been addressed yet in this rom since I am still awaiting definite answers to these issues.

Note: This boots up with O2 Plus activated. I have found this useful as an app launcher and profile switcher. Those who do not want it can unchoose the options in the Today settings. The 6700 app can be used to remove the icons at the bottom of the screen for anyone who does not like them there.

As with the 3.3 rom, I suggest hard resetting before upgrading.
Put the phone in Bootloader Mode
Run the upgrade utility
Hard reset once the upgrade is complete

Have fun.

Remember, this is just a beta release so issues will be fixed. I just wanted to get it out there since I was able to get .Net 2.0 in it.

If you have issues installing, please refer to the Helmi_cAKU3.3 thread. There are instructions there for anyone who gets stuck in bootloader mode.

This is packaged with a Sprint NoJunk ExtRom. Also, disregard when it says something about WideAwake's Custom 2.2. During the upgrade it should say something about Colonels 3.3 and Sprint NoJunk. This is how you will know you are installing the correct rom.

If you do not want the Sprint ExtRom, use Winrar to extract the installer to a folder. In that folder, remove the ms.nbf file. Then double click on the MaUpgrade utility. During the process it should show you that you are only installing a Rom.

More improvements to come in the future. Please post any problems, issues, bugs, suggestions here so they may be addressed. Thanks

Oh yeah, guess you need this :)

http://rapidshare.com/files/13553267...ustom.rar.html

Oh, and as a note, after a base install of this and the Sprint NoJunk Extrom, I have 34MB left in Storage Memory.

Known Issues
-Apparantly there are lockups in IE, this is very random. Happened once to me while clicking on a link in an email. Switched to IE then froze.
-Still some BT issues[/code]

Verizon ExtRom now attached as a ms.nbf file in the zip. Put this in the extracted upgrade utility folder in place of the one that is there. It should tell you VerizonExtRom while runnin the utility.

Beta 2 now available

Additions:
Htc Task Manager (X button app)
Null keyboard
SIP Changer
ClearTemp
SmartsKey
acbPowerMeter
Updated TcPMP to .72RC1
Pocket RAR
UPX4PPC
Pocket Xpdf
batti
psShutXP
updated OnLock
fixed lock all buttons setting
fixed Mark all as read issue
Page Pool increased
Some other fixes, upgrades, tweaks I have forgotten about.
And some special goodies I think people will like

Oops  Edited Sprint ExtRom to disable SDMemory.dll I packaged the wrong ExtRom so this will have to be done manually.

Here is the installer for Sprint:
http://rapidshare.com/files/14187168...oJunk.zip.html

Verizon
http://rapidshare.com/files/14188564...rizon.zip.html

I do not have ExtRoms for other carriers yet. Hopefully after the site upgrade I will get them loaded. Until then, just use the method above to only install the rom and not the ExtRom.

Now the bad part. On bootup you will see the issue with the top and bottom bars and their colors. Just choose another theme. However, if someone can help me fix this I would appreciate it. Thanks.

BE ADVISED, With the Page Pool set high, Program memory is running a little low. I did not notice this until I actually installed the Extended Rom and have running apps. If this becomes an issue, I will back the setting back down a bit.

Smartdialer is having issues as well for some reason.

Enable smartdialer: HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin
change enabled from 0 to 1

BiGMatTFRomJeRSeY 01-26-2007 08:08 PM

very nice job man. if i felt lke hard reseting right now i would load this and try it out but i dont feel like reloading all my stuff again. so when i want to or may have to ill deffintly give this a try.

naigaboy 01-26-2007 08:20 PM

Just want to know if the dlls that cause sd card to disappear have been taken care of in this rom or do I still have to delete those files. Already dl by the way. I just love to flash my phn, dont even know y i receive calls on it.Great job again I might add.

colonel 01-26-2007 08:23 PM

I have not addressed the .dlls yet since I am just now able to actually load the Sprint cabs and test the phone for a little while. Once we determine the necessary .dlls I will include them in the next release.

BTW, I bet I flash more than you :D

naigaboy 01-26-2007 08:43 PM

Lol, I am not even synching contacts anymore for this weekend cos I know I am flashing at least 3 or 4 more times in the next 2 days just to test and find stuff. Somebody pls tell me how to use the pim.vol file so i dont have to keep using active sync to sync contacts. also, how do i save or get my text messages back, i'm using palm threading, which is configured and works too well with this new AKU. Still waiting on that PM colonel. Thanks.

darkphan 01-26-2007 08:52 PM

I just flashed with this one colonel ... so far so good!

PhilR8 01-26-2007 09:16 PM

Wow, looks great - can't wait to install this when I get home from work.

Question, though - you said in your post "Change theme to Crossbow (fail) " - does this mean you couldn't get it to work?

colonel 01-26-2007 09:18 PM

I will edit that. That was from my notes. I wanted it to boot to the Crossbow theme, but it will only go to the blue standard screen. You can then select it at any point like a normal theme.

schettj 01-26-2007 09:26 PM

This looks very cool, colonel, but...

(there is always a BUT...)

Some of these apps I'm not interested in, and I'd like some of my own in there. I know you've put a lot of effort into this, but I am wondering if it would make more sense to release the whole setup and then give us some pointers on adding/removing features (apps, registry settings)

Something more like

** baseline**
** feature 1**
** feature N **

and a howto for dropping some features, and adding our own. Then we could get a nice library of featurs that can be mixed and matched as people get different features working?

I don't know which is better to do this with - this system or the really raw "ROM KITCHEN" version that was also posted.

pzztgotbagz 01-26-2007 09:32 PM

anyone here have a rapidshare logon and pass i can use

.NET CF 2.0

How did you install it and is there a link on XDA between you and Faria? I've been trying to install .NET CF 1.0 and 2.0 but been having problem. thanks

colonel 01-26-2007 09:38 PM

Replying to Schettj two posts up.

Actually I talked with Mike about this. I have not looked over Rom Kitchen yet. The biggest problem with releasing a rom is only including freeware. I can put more in here and I am planning to. The apps in there now are pretty standard as "needed" apps. The O2 stuff I may pull if most people really don't want it. Biggest thing though is that they really aren't taking up that much space.

Installing in the rom was fairly simple, I was just missing some of the registry entries. I have it all bundled in a zip, but it is too big to post. I talked to Mike about finding a way to have this stuff available for people to use.

haus 01-26-2007 09:56 PM

I really like the O2 Plus stuff, but I've just noticed that it is adding duplicate events in my notification queue (according to memmaid). This looks like the only program doing it now - I've soft reset a few times due to instability issues - this morning I had 21 events in the queue, now I have 27, 5 of which are identified as duplicates and they all belong to O2 Plus.

Since I view the perpetually growing Notifications Queue as the source of all evil in the WM5 world (last time I went for 2 months without a hard reset I had 787 events in the queue), I'm wondering if this program is going to cause problems down the road.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks

vboyz103 01-26-2007 10:16 PM

I had Verizon XV6700 and updated to this and now my 611 call is no workie, everything else seems to be the same and all good.

Anyway I can use ##778 to reprogram the 611?

Thanks.

darkphan 01-26-2007 10:16 PM

The only "complaint" I have is the splash screen... heh, but I just flashed it back to the one I have been using (its a skull and crossbones image)

naigaboy 01-26-2007 10:21 PM

2 Attachment(s)
I use scary bears check notifications and clear notify, and it always cleans up the duplicate errors. Never had a problem for that. If you or anybody want to try these cabs out here they go. BTW, fresh install and so far so good. I just noticed that you didnt include the 20225 prl cab in this extended rom, or am i mistaking. Now lets see how long this flash lasts. LOL :D

I have my own domain and linux server, but my uplink pipe is only 780Kbit, so it's not ideal for lots of folks to hammer on it - otherwise I'd be happy to host some of this stuff.

Might be better done as torrents for the big stuff anyway - I can seed many torrents at 20KB up each... we could spread some of the load that way (and I could host the initial seed images/trackers.

Something to think about - at any rate, I'm off for the night... its all very exciting progress! Wideawake did a good thing by getting us all used to the idea of custom roms, and cracking the code as it were to get the ball rolling with AKU 2,2. Wow, that seems like just last month when I was all excited about 2.2 :D

colonel 01-26-2007 10:24 PM

Actually, the Task Manager that is included can do this as well. It is quite a niftly little app.

Most apps and such are fairly small. .Net, Voice Command, and some other are big. If would be nice to find a way to have it here were it is all in one place with instructions and support.

vboyz103 01-26-2007 10:31 PM

Uh oh, now my EVDO is attempting to call Sprint PCS :(

I think I let PST executed, wonder if it messed up my phone.

How do I get it back?

Thanks.

I'm on Verizon!!

vboyz103 01-26-2007 10:57 PM

Nevermind I fixed the EVDO dialing error by going into HKLM\ControlPanel\ConnMgr\Providers and the second key that looks like (78XXXX} has default sprint pcs and my newly created Verizon connction. I deleted the Sprint PCS one and bam verizon connected no problem.

Just so somebody would know.

Jady 01-26-2007 11:19 PM

So has anyone else done this version with verizon? Are there any specific issues with vzw?

willysp 01-26-2007 11:45 PM

First of all - Thanks! Fine work.

Some quick initial comments (you asked for opinions & preferences, so I'll include them). More testing tomorrow.

- CF 2 - WOW, neat. Works fine with Virtual Earth.
- Dialer just the way I like it

- I'd prefer to not have O2 and TCPMP (concerned about O2 using Today 'slots' even though not selected - had a problem in the past with WM5 and too many inactive plug-ins)
- I'd prefer to not have left soft-key mapped to Flashlight (trivial to change, no biggie)
- Not sure about putting beta SW (Live Search) in ROM

Having an issue with icons in the Start Menu. OnLock and Resco Explorer (installed to SD) both have the default 'DOS-like' icons in the Start Menu after having run. Can be selected from menu and run OK, but never get the non-default icons for either.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the input. Let me know if having O2 deactivated is causing problems. As far as I know, OnLock never actually had an icon. The Resco thing may be due to a SD card dismount. Keep an eye on it to see if you are loosing your SD card. Sprint, Verizon, or other?

Wideawake 01-27-2007 12:25 AM

Colonel, check my other post about .net 2.0s upload. You can set a custom theme on boot, but you have to place a special file in the extrom to set it automatically. Nice work I may flash later. ;) And my custom can now be put on hold till I have more time to truly deck it out. Thanks for buying me some time colonel. BTW I think I flash more than u do. :P :laughing6:

another note....the delete all is a bia to intergrate. had time with that one too. :D
~Mike

colonel 01-27-2007 12:43 AM

Yeah, thought about the Extended Rom as an option, but was trying to avoid that for those that didn't use "my" ExtRom. It was really kind of a waste of my time to spend a couple of hours on it just to fail. :)

gnafin 01-27-2007 12:44 AM

installed ok but i got a error on bootup..... sddaemon.exe cannot be open...what is this? Oh i have a vx6700

thanks..

glenn

pzztgotbagz 01-27-2007 12:48 AM

same error for me on ppc6700

colonel 01-27-2007 12:48 AM

That was the Voice Dialer that I nuked. Did you do a hard reset? Something was trying to open that app. Make sure you do a hard reset after install because there should be no references left to the old Voice Dialer.

pzztgotbagz 01-27-2007 12:49 AM

so are u saying to do a hard reset after loading up the new rom???????

colonel 01-27-2007 12:53 AM

Yep, always hard reset after an upgrade to get rid of any remnants.

pzztgotbagz 01-27-2007 12:55 AM

grrrrrrrrrrrr why must i see this k everytime i turn my phone on gotta go read and see how to change it

pzztgotbagz 01-27-2007 12:58 AM

also have u added all the needed registry edits and fixes in ur release or is there anything i need to do

pzztgotbagz 01-27-2007 01:06 AM

welp did the update and now i cant get my contacts to work keeps blinking when i go to contacts imma try another softreset and see what happens if not looks like ill be flashing back to oem rom

Vboys, this ROM is packaged with the default Sprint ExtROM (extended ROM). That means that if you didn't pull out the extended ROM before you flashed, you wiped your Verizon ExtROM and replaced it with Sprint's, which might explain why you had some Sprint stuff on your XV6700.

This ROM works fine on Verizon phones as long as you only update the CE ROM image and nothing else (don't change the radio or the extrom).

If you did only flash the CE ROM image, did you forget to hard reset after flashing?

You can recover from this by running the latest Verizon flash update from UTStarcom's web site and then reflashing just the ROM image from Colonel's package.

You're right about OnLock not having an icon in Programs (I'd never used it before so ASSumed it did; sorry - my error).

I installed 4 more apps to SD (FlexMail, Virtual Earth, acbPowerMeter and Adobe Reader LE 2.0). Reader icon was OK, but same issue with FlexMail, Virtual Earth and PowerMeter icons as with Resco Explorer.

Interestingly - if I wait long enough after a soft reset (15-20 seconds) before tapping the Start menu, the icons are OK and will stay that way. If I wait only 10 or so seconds after a reset, the icons are defaulted, and will stay that way, even if I use the apps, until the next reset.

I don't think I'm losing the SD card, but it does take about 10 seonds after power on before apps can access the card.

Sprint (and I used your ExtRom).

pzztgotbagz 01-27-2007 01:12 AM

i think it has something to do with the fact that i carry my conacts with me all the time via the pim file imma try again and see what happens my copy and overwrite work just fine with oem rom and 2.2

vboyz103 01-27-2007 01:16 AM

@haus

Yeah I already had to reflash from Verizon rom and re-did this Rom and soft reset while it's doing the PST thing.

Man I need to think of a custom ROM for my "MUST HAVE" apps or som'n keep re-installing them is not fun. :(

vboyz103 01-27-2007 01:25 AM

I myself got the "DOS-like" icon as everyone else too when the device booted up, and I had some shortcuts added to the launcher apps that point to a location in SD card. Wonder why 3.3 rom has this problem where as this problem didn't exist in 2.2 as far as I know.
