AKU2.2 beta, much better battery life, simple reg change

Ok, your milage may vary here, but for some reason my 6700 with the 2.2 rom (which otherwise was working great) started to really have battery performance issues. I chalked it up to maybe using more network or talk, but even when I was sure I wasn't doing any of it the battery seemed to be draining way too fast.

I don't use pocket MSN, and if you do this will not help you, but I started checking the processes running when the phone was in death drain mode and sure enough, that dreaded pmsnserver.exe is running...

Googled around, as the old solution that I read a while back was to kill any reference to that exe in the registry, and found this:

Quote:
I just changed the registry entry for pMSNShared.dll this was the first entry that came up after searching for "msn", in a folder called "InprocServer32" there is a string "Default" change string to "pMSNShared.dl" instead of a .dll extension. Program can't run without a dll. Easy to change back if you have a problem just search for the first entry of "msn" go into folder "InprocServer32" and rename the "pMSNShared.dl" back to original "pMSNShared.dll"

Haven't seen that little pMSNServer.exe running yet for a few days..
I did the same edit (changed .dll to .dl) rebooted, and hey presto no more pmsnserver.exe, and my battery life is much better again - for example a whole day of no voice calls, 1 hour MP3 play on headphones screen off, and auto email checking 2 IMAP accounts every hour, end of day (14 hours off charger) standard OEM battery at 70% - that's more like it!

Something to check into if you don't use pocket MSN. If you do use it, this will kill it, which you probably don't want.

I use this after I install everything I want and remove all the Today Plug-ins That I never use. I have removed the MSN Today Plugin already so I cheched if the prossess was running. And it wasn't.

Just a heads up... There are 10 References to that DLL in the Sprint_Custom Beta 2.0 ROM. If you want all the reg keys let me know and I'll post them.

Ahh... What they do? ... Got me. Most of them look like they refer to functions the OS is hooking into.

Let me know what you find... Maybe we can figure out how to build and Installer/Uninstaller for MSN. If you get any progess maybe I'll try and pick apart the beta installer to fill in any blanks we will have. But I'm sure that installer is very different though.

Thanx. I also want to be able to uninstall the Cyberon VC app. I saw a CAB someone posted, but when I run it- it tells me that I do not have the proper permissions to run this program on the phone.

Do you know what I need to do?

I posted a CAB to install Voice Command not Uninstall . But yeah it's on the ROM. I've been begging Wideawake to nuke it for us. Thats why I posted the Uninstaller, and an option for those without MS Voice Command.

Check here for how to remove/cripple VC: http://www.ppcgeeks.com/custom-aku2-...start,135.html

So if I do what it says from that link it will uninstall it?

I want to make sure it doesn't interfere with MSVC.

By removing all those entries MSVC will be fine right?

Ok back to pocketMSN

The one reg entry I edit is the one that actually says which DLL file to use - by making that an invalid entry (.dl instead of .dll) the whole stupid pmsnserver.exe will always fail to load/run whenever the system gets the whim to start it up.

All the reg entries are used at various points in a windows os (mobile or otherwise) for loading COM objects and sending them messages - the important one to kill such a COM object from running is the one that points at the program file that actually needs to load/run.

As to why it decided to start doing it now, I have no idea. I do NOT have it loading in the today screen, never did.

All I can tell you is, since making that simple reg edit (and then soft-resetting after waiting a few minutes for the registry cache to be flushed) my battery life has been outstanding.
