mine was doing this a while back, but it stopped since..
all i did was go back through the backlight/power options and recheck/OK everything, reboot.

im sure youve already tried that though... since, mine has stopped with that annoying coming back on every 5 min or so..

I have this problem, too. This was causing me to call people randomly until I installed slide to unlock. It is still annoying, but at least I am not calling random people anymore. Could it be related to the automatic send/receive option for email? When my screen comes on, it does appear to be using the data connection.

I was told by Sprint CSR's multiple times at different branches that it has something to do with the network communicating with the phone or the signal updating. I was also told by them that they all do it, PPC's I mean. There was also no fix atleast that they knew about. I guess we all just have to live with it for now.
