I actually keep my in-call volume on the phone at about 3/4 of the way up.
When I first got the phone I used a headset about 99% of the time.
When I stopped using the headset, and just started using the phone, I had long since made the change and so I really didn't have anything to compare it to.
I know lots of people say the volume on the phone is very poor, but I really don't have a problem with it.
I was just throwing out that suggestion because I often read that it helps a little.

change the ringtone. MS gave some ringtones which were good and loud.
