Today item in start menu WM6

What is that today heading in the start menu for? It can't be removed and it doesn't do anything. Is there any way that it can be made to toggle the today screen off and on? I like to leave my screen clean with only a background picture. But the large clock with the today screen is handy for when I use the phone as an alarm.

Well, it does do something - that is it brings you back to the today screen (toggles it on, so to speak) from other applications. Toggling it off doesn't make sense to me. Something has to be the default background, and Today is it.
In most use conditions, the Today selection on the start menu is redundant since I always use the red phone button to accomplish the same thing quicker. Comes in handy if you need to get to Today while on a call, though; I've accidentally hung up on people several times using the "normal" method.
