How to use internet with wifi without data plan?

Guys, i'm really new to PPC device. This is actually my first PPC and my first PDA as well.
I'm from Canada, with Bell as provider. the data plan is over $60 over here (rip off). I got a PPC-6700 with my company fund, and as I understand, wi-fi can be use to connect to the internet whenever there is a wireless router around.

Unfortunately, there are too many terms that confused me. It's been 10hours that I'm trying to figure out how to access to internet without using the data plan.

Can you guys give me some hints? I've been searching around the forum and I couldn't find anything, probably because I didn't use the right term.

Can somebody explain to me how this work? what's IRDA? Evdo?... and how do I connect to the internet without wi-fi!

Thank you all in advance

the easiest way to turn wifi on, is to press and hold down the left internet button on the side of the ppc. it will take you into comm manager, from there, press the tower with ridges coming out of the tower. that should turn on your wifi. or if you ppc has the EV icon, press that and select "turn on wifi". EV=EVDO(broadband like internet)

If you wat to make sure you are on WIFI(wireless internet through a wireless router) than just go to connection manager and turn phone off (looks like a phone receiver) and turn WIFI on (looks like the little tower).
There are times when the PPC will change from WIFI to EVOD(network high speed connection) all by its self, if the EVDO signal is stronger than the WIFI the PPC will change all by its self to EVDO, but if you turn the prone off and wifi on the PPC will be forced to use wifi. Hope this helps

Thanks for the quick reply guys, I thought a stupid question like that wouldn't get that many answers within a day.

I know about the comm manager and its logo. However, I can't connect to my wireless router and I don't know why. Is there any setting that I have to do in my router for it?

For example the Mac number and all? Because I tried to go in the setting and I can't modify any of those number.

And is there a way to turn off EVDO for good? because if I connect to the Data plan by accident, I'll have to pay $15/Mb

holy crap! thats outrageous! I have unlimited included in my package for free and sprints unlimited data plan is only 15 bux total! wow they r stiffing yall. but anyway to remove data services from ur provider just go to start/settings/conncections/advanced/select networks/ tap edit on ur carrier name, then u should be able to tap and hold and delete that connection. this should stop it from ever getting on if im not mistaken. as far as ur wifi is it secured or unsecured?

Ya, it's crazy. The data plan over here is around $60/month
The reason they charge me $15/Mb is because they want to force me to take one of their data plan.

I dont' see any connection in start/settings/conncections/advanced/select networks/
I think I deleted all of them yesterday.

As for my router, it's very un-secure... I'm using a D-link
What do you mean by if my wifi is secure or not?
Do I have to have an option for wifi in my router as well?

so its a dlink wifi router? what I mean by secure is do u have to have a key to conncet or is it open access? but if u don't have a wifi router than that's an issue but if u do then u should be able to turn wifi on ur ppc and it should pick it up if its secured it will ask for a key if not u should be able to hit connect and ur ready to go.

my dlink router doesn't have wifi
but I do see other people connection, but they are secured. Oh well, I'll go try it in a coffee shop or something, because I really don't know how to setup my D-link

Thanks guy.
