Updater error- won't complete

I'm getting an error when I run the updater with the new PPCGeeks_OEM.rar file included. It seems to finish and then says that there is an error and it can't copy the file and rolls back all changes.
I just updated the other files and am manually downloading the PPCGeeks file, but I wanted you guys to know.
[In the past, this has been caused by trying to update while the Kitchen was running or something like that, but that wasn't the case this time.]

I wish I could replicate that. You're the 2nd person I've heard has that problem. Unfortunately, until I can replicate it (I've seen it in the past, but not recently), I can't fix it. I'll see what can be done to generate a useful log.

Re: Updater error- won't complete

Not a big deal. It's still happening, but like I said, I was able to download everything manually.
Even after running the updater, it still shows that PPCGeeks_OEM.rar has an available update, but I know it doesn't.
I'm letting it try to download to see what happens. I've got the file saved in another directory in case the Updater does something to the file that's in the kitchen now.

I need someone who repeatedly gets failures using Updater to assist w/ debugging. Find me in the chat room. It will also help if you run Updater with -log option and post the contents here.

I still get the error (I think I mentioned this), so it's duplicatable by me- if you tell me how to run Updater to get a log file, I'd be happy to try it and show you the log.

well i ran into issues, however they were isolated to my environment (i.e. my internet got disconnected during update)
once i reconnected (using WModem) and plugged into the charger, the updater worked w/out a hitch

Updater.exe -log

You can modify the shortcut in the startmenu, make a new one, or run it manually from a command prompt (it's in c:\program files\ppckitchen.org\buildos\updater)

Without wanting to sound like a retard- I can't do any of these.
When I try to add " -log" to the current shortcut, Windows won't let me.
When I try to run from the run command or a command line, I keep getting told that c:\program is not a valid program or that it can't be found.
Same thing when I try to create a new desktop shortcut or alter the current desktop shortcut.
Very strange.
I'll try again tomorrow.

You need to use the change directory command to navigate to c:\program files\ppckitchen.org\buildos\updater then run the command...

*edit* this step is prolly not required [skip this step]
Code:

cd c:\ <enter>
once your in command prompt
Code:

cd c:\program files\ppckitchen.org\buildos\updater <enter>
and then
Code:

updater.exe -log <enter>

Re: Updater error- won't complete

or, you can use "s to surrond the terms with spaces:
"c:\program files\ppckitchen.org\buildos\updater\updater.exe" -log

It's important you run from within the updater directory. Consequently, using the RUN command won't work right.

Ah. That all makes sense. I was enclosing the entire command withing the "s.
When I just asked for a log file, I got one, but it looks like it was for the most recent running of updater, which I just cancelled. So now I'm letting it run all the way through with only the PPCGeeks_OEM.rar selected and I'll run the log command after that.

OK. Here is a log from an update where only PPCGeeks_OEM.rar was selected and I got the termination error.

Please try download with this version of updater (same build, just more logging) and post log. You can replace your existing version if you like. Thanks.

Put this in the same folder: http://ppckitchen.org/BuildOS/Updater.exe.manifest

XP MCE

That helped.
Started the updater and immediately got an error box saying that there was "No error message available." I pressed OK and updater started.

Re: Updater error- won't complete

Got a 'time out' message at the end, along with the regular 'couldn't copy' message.
Nice having the option to put the Updater in the system tray.
Here's the log:

Re: Updater error- won't complete

That's progress. Try this build, please.

http://ppckitchen.org/buildos/updater.exe

The log will be big...you will see a section that repeats a LOT during the download. I'm only interested in the last 80 or so lines: the last 20 or so lines of the repeating section to the end of the log.

The log is huge. But zipped got it smaller. Much.

One more time, please.

It may succeed; send log anyway.

Didn't succeed, but had fewer errors than previous attempt. Wasn't signed, so authorized the certificate.

Re: Updater error- won't complete

Well, it's odd. It's generating a TimeOut error on the final read of the file. Very strange.

Try with his build. I've increased the buffer size on the odd chance that it will a) help with performance and b) help with this problem.

http://ppckitchen.org/buildos/updater.exe

Also, what version of internet explorer do you have, and are you current w/ windows updater?

I use what I think is the most recent version of IE7 [7.05.5730.11], but I usually use FF3 unless something indicates that IE will work better.
I am current with Windows Updater.

Newest log. Getting much smaller.
I skipped the one from early this morning and just ran the last updater you posted.

find wininet.dll on your system (probably in system32). right click it, properties, details. What is file version?

OK.
Was just wondering... you responded so quickly to earlier posts and then it seemed like the thread died...
Appreciate all your hard work!=D>

None of the easy fixes worked. Having to actually write a different approach to the problem.

Re: Updater error- won't complete

Updater files have been updated. Please try download again, using stock updater.

Trident 08-12-2008 08:42 PM

Re: Updater error- won't complete

Ummm, I didn't keep the stock updater, as you said I could install these in the regular folder. So I just updated the BuildOS files that were updated- strange, that I had to keep pressing "OK" with little popup windows that said "copying" and "calculating access points" (or something like that).
I'm trying the PPCGeeks_OEM.rar file now.

Trident 08-12-2008 08:51 PM

Re: Updater error- won't complete

Still have the same problem with the PPCGeeks_OEM.rar file.
Gets to the end, then an error "Can't copy... " then rolls back changes.

ah well, was wishful thinking it was fixed :)

Still working on an alternate method.

Is that file actually updated today or just the other files?
