Don't hold the power button in for so long? ...it only takes a quick push/release. If you hold it in long enough, it toggles the backlight on/off.

If you're just doing a quick tap and it's only turning off the backlight, what else did you build into your ROM?

Tapping the power button does turn off the phone (standby). Letting the phone sit idle for the period stated in the power settings does not turn the phone off. The idle period is set at 1 minute currently, and it never kicks in.
