Disable 3G, Force Edge - Donation to someone who figures it out

With every At&t phone I've had, I've been able to disable 3G when I don't need it. This usually helps save battery life, especially when your 3G service is poor.

In my house, my phones will constantly switch between 3G and 2G, so I would like to force 2G only.

So far I haven't found a way to do this on the Surround.

I'm willing to throw someone a little donation if they can figure it out

##3282# will get you in Field Test, and under Settings there's one for Band and an option is 2G Only, but it doesn't seem to do anything, and once you get out of Field Test, it goes back to Automatic.
