Sprint Nexus S
So who's considering buying the Nexus S from Sprint? I was going to buy an Epic until the Froyo debacle that Samsung or Sprint doesn't have a clue how to release a device without breaking something, crippling or bloating up a phone.
Yes, I know that dual core phones are around the corner and quad core possibly by years end, but how long before that power is actually used? Developers most likely aren't going to make programs for only a handful of these devices or they risk only a handful of sales. So I'd think it would be a safe bet that the Nexus S isn't going to be sluggish for at least a year (if that) and by then, the newer versions of Android should be more easily portable to the crowds after the manufacturers gain more experience with customizing it. At least the Nexus S will be updated consistently through the next few critical upgrades of Android and now that Flash and better Bluetooth support are already present, they just need to get multi-core, higher res and OS optimizations in place and we'll be sitting pretty. The only thing I'm concerned about is if the Nexus S suffers from similar problems that the Nexus One did when they tried to use it on TMobile. I hope a good amount of product testing was used to certify the phone because it would suck if it suffered the same problems that the newly released Epic had since the hardware is practically the same... I thought I even saw somewhere that the non-contract price of the Sprint Nexus S was a mere $399. Not too shabby, contract price or not, this looks (to me at least) the way to go for the next year and re-evaluate the offerings in mid 2012. Also should be nice to have a reference phone with all the Android fragmentation going on in the market. No point in having all this dual/quad core power if there isn't much or anything to take advantage of it. I see software support being necessary in 2011 and raw power in 2012, when the OS hopefully stabilizes. Anyone else with thoughts on this topic? Agree/Disagree? |
Already having an Epic, with perfectly working Froyo for months now, I'm not interested. Looks like an Epic minus the qwerty, not sure on the FFC. Bought my Epic in November for $200 on craigslist.

Re: Sprint Nexus S
I just got on the waiting list yesterday for my Nexus S. I have an upgrade and don't want to lose it. The Evo 3D is going to be a fast phone, but it's not for me. I'll use the Nexus S for a year and upgrade when the latest and greatest comes out.

Re: Sprint Nexus S
I am tempted by the fact of the Nexus S being bloatware-free and more Android friendly. I am a little bothered by it being a Samsung (not a fan) phone, and am leaning toward the 3D....

Re: Sprint Nexus S
I have an EVO since launch day. I'm running Cyanogen 7 AOSP rom on it. What a difference without the bloatware and garbage HTC Sense UI on it. It's like a different device.
I can only image the bloated porkey 3D interface HTC is cooking up to take a dual core phone to it's knees. A Nexus S with dual core would be my perfect phone. |

Re: Sprint Nexus S
I hate the screens on the epic... White looks light blue... My eyes can't adjust to that...
So for that reason... I did not get the epic and will not get the Nexus. Besides... My upgrade is coming right after CES next year. We'll see what's out there. p. |

I'm getting it, google's flagship franchise device bottom line. We should be happy sprint made the cdma nexus happen. Hopefully this relationship (sprint&nexus) is healthy and last a long time. I was in the verge of switching to tmo just to have a nexus one and s. |

Re: Sprint Nexus S
I don't understand why you'd want HTC to make it....Google is doing the software and Samsung the hardware.. according to most people thats the ideal as people praise samsung for hardware and criticize software..here your getting the best of both worlds...

I pre ordered one from best buy for the wife, will be picking it up Sunday. I will hang on to the Evo until a quad core comes around to sprint, or possibly a tempting dual core.

Re: Sprint Nexus S
Just walked into the Sprint store this morning and used my Sprint Premier annual upgrade and bought the Nexus S to replace my EVO (no I'm not getting rid of the EVO...just want to compare the phones) and so far I love the Nexus S but the EVO is still better hardware wise and the Music player works better on the EVO for what I need. EVO has the HDMI port, removable memory, the .3" that makes the screen look better and most importantly the kickstand (oh how I need the kickstand at work). One issue I've noticed on the Nexus S, is the same issue I see on the Honeycomb tablets, is the connection to the Market loses connection quite often (no matter if I'm using 3g, 4g or WiFi). Also hate the headset jack on the bottom of the phone.

Re: Sprint Nexus S
Let me begin by saying that my review of the Nexus and EVO is not meant to be used as an official review of both devices. I'm just stating why I prefer the EVO over the Nexus S. Nexus S is a very sexy device but it just doesn't have the stuff on the EVO that works for me. Now my official response to gTen (with the utmost respect).

I was talking about the location of the hardware. I hate how the headset port is on the bottom. Quote:

I've been waiting for a version of the Galaxy S without the keyboard for Sprint. Time for me to pull the trigger.

personally I would love if they had choices of back covers to do things like this so that you can say have an attachable keyboard whenever or a gamepad or a kickstand ...all on same phone..but I guess we can only dream :/ |

EvO 4G---> Nexus S 4G |
Wirelessly posted (Htc Arrive: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.4; en-us; Nexus S 4G Build/GRJ22) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)
The sns 4g is for sure an enjoyable experience. Navigating speed I don't see any major differences. I love the rounded 4" contoured high resolution touch screen. I can live without htc sense easily, I miss the large sense calendar, 8mp cams. But the total build quality of the nexus s is superior hands down. No tender charge port, power button and battery door. Made in Korea btw not north Korea lol. |
Re: Sprint Nexus S
Do you have to pay the extra Sprint 4G fee with this phone? I think I'll wait... does not look like many are buying this one.

Re: Sprint Nexus S
I just ordered one to replace my HTC Touch Pro (Yes, the original touch Pro not the Touch Pro 2) kicking it at "wish it were more impressive" 3g speeds so I am sure the $10 extra is going to feel worth it. Not to mention the faster CPU... the sluggishness was getting to me. But after 4 years it was a decent phone and never had to be repaired/ replaced.
As far as the mention of the lack of the replaceable SD card, I am OK with it as I had a 16Gb on my Touch Pro and never filled it up. If I need more space I will connect it to my laptop so I transfer in and transfer out. Since it can be used as a wifi port I wonder if I can just connect to the device and transfer wirelessly. That would be even more convenient that swapping SD cards. Also, does anyone know if I can transfer my contacts from the HTC Touch Pro to the Nexus S 4G? That was the only thing keeping me from going android... but I did it anyway for the lack of bloatware! |
Re: Sprint Nexus S
You can export your contacts in outlook to a CSV file and import to your gmail account.
|
Re: Sprint Nexus S
You can also sync your contacts on your phone to your google account. No need to export to a CSV file.
|
Re: Sprint Nexus S
Hotmail is another option... It just depends on what email account you use.
I use the hotsync option of hotmail and love it. I can sync my calendar on the fly with the one on my EVO and the one on Hotmail on the cloud. Good luck bro. That phone looks very sweet. p. |
Re: Sprint Nexus S
Thanks for the help - got the contacts transferred. First experience with Android and it seems pretty sweet. I am definitely digging the customizing with the apps being so readily available. So many to sift through too!
My only beef with this thing so far (only had it a couple days) is the 4g doesn't seem to connect very often and I know it's there because I have Clear also. I am also only seeing a couple bars of Sprint where on my Touch Pro I consistently got full bars. I updated the PRL already, any suggestions? |
Re: Sprint Nexus S
What about visual voicemail??? Is there an apk to be able to use vvm so I don't have to dial in to check vmail
