Want WP7 Mango today ?

Edit: I created easier directions here

You still will need The Zune 4.8.XXXX version, your current version of Zune will not read the mango device correctly.

Yep, someone on XDA released the files that came with a dev account to be able to install Mango beta on your phone. I believe this is the build that you have been reading on assorted sites.

You need to download 5 files and do some registry settings on your PC then install in order.

[HOW TO] Mango Beta Update - xda-developers

The general thoughts are it's faster and has a lot of extra features but, not everything works 100% (Twitter was not working as of yet)

Note: not all apps will support multi tasking (a change needs to be in the app, so unless updated for mango, it won't work). THERE ARE BUGS and INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK !!!!!!!

Remember you should do your homework, if it does not work for you, you could possably BRICK your phone

Dont say you were not warned !!! If you do it, post your results please, I downloaded everything but, need my phone today, but, trying to see others reults with a HTC Trophy before I try the next step

Here's the details from the link above.

not there yet, it's upgrading at the moment (at the last and longest stage). I had mine unlocked via the MFG tool. I reset the two registry keys PortalUrlInt and PortalUrlProd back to the https links
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DeviceReg]
"PortalUrlProd"="https://developerservices.windowspho...on.svc/01/2010"
"PortalUrlInt"="https://developerservices.windowspho...on.svc/01/2010"
(thanks to drkfngthdragnlrd)
and set the DeveloperUnlockState to 1. While still in the MFG tool I started the MangoB2-DevRetailUpdate tool.
It would not work initially. Closed the tool, started the new beta Zune software and it relocked the phone. Closed Zune, disconnected phone and went back into the MFG app and unlocked it. Connected phone to PC again, restarted the tool and it started the backup and installation process.
How to Un-Lock your Phone without Chevron 7
You can unlock the phone by using the MFG registry editor.
Open the MFG app and use the password to open it. If you don't know it's (appmfg#*#)
Go to Engineer Menu -> Other Settings -> Edit Registry
Set your ROOT PATH to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
Set your input path to "\Comm\Security\LVMod"
Set your input key to "DeveloperUnlockState" and set to DWORD
Hit Query. Output result should return a "0" or a random long number. If it does continue.
Set your input data box to "1" and hit SET. Output result should be 1
How To Keep Your Phone Unlocked
You can keep your phone unlocked and prevent Zune from re-locking it.
Open the MFG app and use the password to open it. If you don't know it's (appmfg#*#)
Go to Engineer Menu -> Other Settings -> Edit Registry
Set your ROOT PATH to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
Set your input path to "\Software\Microsoft\DeviceReg"
Set your input key to "PortalUrlProd" and set to DWORD
Hit Query. Output result should return data. If it does continue.
Keep your input data box empty and hit SET. Output result should be 0
Keep this screen open and continue to Part 2

If you have a HTC phone, your rom for your phone might be sitting around somewhere on XDA (that is the place to find it), take a full backup with Zune (gota look up how that's done)

Make sure you have a rom of your current version so if you need to roll back AND make a backup of your device. SO as long as you can install the rom to your device, it should be restoring your data...

I think...Never tried it before

Do you have access to a .EDU account ? If not how did you get it for free ? I have been playing with the tools a little and would love to get an account but, hate to have to pay $99 till I really know what I am doing.

Feel free to PM me if you don't want it public...

As for Mango beta, Very, VERY tempted. I can't find a rom OEM for my Trophy (the ones on XDA claim to not work), so I really don't have a backout plan.

I've been reading about people who have been using it on XDA (spent a lot of time on there today reading about this), and every one claims that it's very stable and faster than the current build. Also, a lot of the new features work fine, so you will be getting 85% of the new features working very well to great (some issues but, worth spending some time on XDA as there is a lot of people using it over there).

The speed and perfomance difference is enough to tempt me alone...never mind the features.

MMMMMM....Mangos...

Edit:

My question about the backup addon for Zune, from what I was reading, people used it to go back to Pre-NoDo before, so it might just work to take a full backup of your phone then installing Mango, if you hate it, or too buggy, just connect to Zune and restore... would like to know for sure

I'm pretty tempted but it seems like a lot of work to go through to get it on there.
I'm not to worried about messing up my phone but it just seems like I'd rather wait it out. I'm not really missing the TP1 & TP2 with always being on a cooked rom with some stuff not working or breaking all of the sudden. A few more months will come soon enough.

I agree, it's soo tempting though! I wouldn't mind spending the $ and the other 2 methods I've read about are just 2 risky now that I'm riding a flash free summer. Decisions, decisions lol.
