I'm not familiar with the HTD, nor have I ever taken a phone to another carrier. But I have read a lot about doing such things. From what I understand, the carrier has no visibility into the OS that you run on your phone. So there is no reason to not use a custom ROM. I also don't understand why you wouldn't be able to use "browsing" (I assume you mean internet access?). Picture mail seems to differ based on carrier, but I think that should work too. Although if it doesn't, it's easy to use your email to send pictures.
