I'm not aware of any other way of confirming it outside of removing the battery.

well, you can go into settings/system/device lock and set it so any button wakes the phone, but then you will have annoying phone waking up in your pocket everywhere you go problems, as well as pocket dialing your best friends house at 2 am and waking up her parents, causing them to be very cross. best idea is, just remember if you shut it off or not

Try taking the stylus out. If the phone is on, the screen will come on. If the phone is off, nothing will happen...

Not sure if that will work in this case or not. OP hasn't specified if he has a Mogul or Pro. I don't remember the Mogul waking when you remove the stylus or slide out the keyboard. Does it?
