iPhone Tethering?

Ok I have a few questions concerning iPhone tethering.

Just to make it clear im trying to use my iPhone as a wifi hotspot using at&t's 3g network for use with my laptop.

Id like to know if there is a free app for this. I seen mywi which is 10$.

Also, will my phone still be able to perform all other functions while this is enabled i.e. text,call,recieve,use apps?
