How do I root my android phone

I have a LG Optimus IV and I want to be the root user. I want to use my phone as a WIFI hot spot and the apps on Android market said I needed to be the root user to enable this. Can someone help me please?

if no help here try android forum or xda developers (?) they may help also......way above my talent level tho...
