Problems waking phone after prolonged "sleep"

I have a Zio that had been upgraded to Andriod 2.2 prior to me taking possession of it. It activated at Cricket store just fine and everything seems to work great, except...

Sometimes when it's been sitting for several hours and I go to wake it by hitting the End key, as usual, the screen turns a shade of gray indicating it's somewhat "on" but there is nothing displayed. I usually keep hitting the End key every few seconds, hold it down, sometimes I hold down the Send key but thus far I can't figure out why it does this or what is the proper procedure for waking it when this happens.

Anyone have this issue and/or can help me figure this out?!?
