Thumbs down Ugh Google Really?!

http://techcrunch.com/2010/07/27/and...nsing-service/

I have no problem with Google and the developers trying to make sure their apps aren't illegally shared with everyone in the world. I do have issue with:

"A limitation of copy protection is that applications using it can be installed only on compatible devices that provide a secure internal storage environment. For example, a copy-protected application cannot be downloaded from Market to a device that provides root access, and the application cannot be installed to a device’s SD card."

and

"If this effectively wards off pirates then it will be great news for Android developers, but it adds one more potential issue for users: it’s up to devs to decide how often they want to have their application phone home to request verification, and an over-restrictive application could be really frustrating if you’re trying to use it on a plane or in an area with poor connectivity. That said, if a developer implements a policy that forces you to ping Google’s servers every time you launch the app for no good reason, then it’s probably going to get hammered with negative reviews."

WTF happened to open source Google, why do you care if I root or not. Some of the approved apps in the Google store already requires it.

Well I hope the community boycotts any developer that utilizes the root portion of the licensing service...

Re: Ugh Google Really?!

Something of this type was bound to happen. No developer wants their apps to be shared especially if they are getting paid for their work...

Google should atleast give the option for one of these alternatives but they should not mandate it.

i know its because the laws just changed the other day, but that kind of goes against what 2.2 is suppose to have available, ie - storing apps to the SD Card finally..

it may suck for awhile, but everything is always figured out in a timely fashion it seems when it comes to Android.... winMO, thats another story, sometimes things take months(unlockers etc) to happen... Android devs and hackers seem to break things a heck of alot faster atleast

Re: Ugh Google Really?!

Well it is no surprise they went into this direction to interest more heavy weight developers into the platform...but either way..I'm sure given a short amount of time it will be broken >.>

Re: Ugh Google Really?!

Things like this only hurt the end-user and the developers.

Anyone who knows how to root their device knows how to download an APK, even if the purpose isn't to get a free app, but to circumnavigate the red tape.

If they think denying access to apps like this is going to cut down on the warez, they are gravely mistaken.

a copy-protected application cannot be downloaded from Market to a device that provides root access

Am I reading this wrong or are you misinterpreting it?

Doesn't that say you can not download any app that PROVIDES root access on a device from the Marketplace or is it you can not download it to a rooted phone?

Meaning you can't just download an app like 1-Click Root from the Market.. etc?

I personally took it as if you can't provide a secure holding space for the app, the app won't go to your phone. Rooted phones give you access to the areas that hold the apps at, if the phone is rooted you can take it and copy it to the flash card and then share it, email it, hack it, etc..

And if I am wrong, which is frequently as my wife loves to tell me, I still want the app that allows me to wipe my phone remotely which needs root access in order to make it load at startup and other apps of this sort for security reasons.

So yes, either way, I still want both of these permissions, don't claim that the phone is open and then restrict everything that's relevant to business users. To my knowledge Google hasn't given special permissions to approved developers that can force root at install so that you can do the things that I mentioned. At least Apple and Microsoft are being up front with you from the start about limitations and not deceptive like Google's starting to be.

That is an excellent question and one that could be interpreted either way, simply because of the way they worded it.

Quick thought, didn't these rules already go into effect?

According to http://android-developers.blogspot.c...r-android.html:, "The licensing service is available now; our plan is for it to replace the current Android Market copy-protection mechanism over the next few months. I encourage you to check out the Licensing Your Applications section of our Developer Guide and the Android Market Help Center to learn how you can take advantage of this new service immediately."

Is 1-Click Root still in the market or has it been removed? I'm still waiting to test drive the Epic so I'm still a WM6.x user and unable to verify...
