Re: Does i need to be rooted to install non market apps?
No. You just have to enable "install from other sources" in the options. The only thing I'm looking forward to rooting for right now is so I can get rid of all this Sprint crap. I have no interest in Qik, Football, Nascar, Sprint Nav, Sprint TV, or Sprint's Voicemail app.

The .apk files are in the system partition which you cannot write to or delete from unless you are rooted. Once you've rooted you have lots of options to delete the unwanted programs. You can delete via commandline either on the computer (via adb) or directly on the phone (via connectbot or similar) or you could get something like root explorer to navigate the directory in a nice GUI and delete them that way.
Yes, I'm also looking forward to a free wifi tether. I like how the Sprint official version presents itself as an actual access point instead of an ad-hoc network. This is really useful because computers will auto connect and other devices that don't recognize ad-hoc networks can utilize the connection. However, I can't see the point of spending $30 a month for something I have had for free for years just for those minimal benefits. |
