Sorry if this is common knowledge, but how do I interpret the releases? Which is the best one to install, or newest? What do the five digit numbers represent vs. the actual version number? Most important, can you recommend the coolest, fastest, most stable one?

There's really very little difference from each. They are different branches, and with each passing release, they'll differ from each other in slightly more ways. As of right now, they're each in their beginning inception, so they're much the same.

There is no coolest, fastest, most stable as of yet. Although 28xxx seems pretty popular right now :P
