What is the main difference between the two builds anyway? I understand they come from different com trees but are they made for different devices, or have any different features?

There are different COM trees that focus on different components of the OS. The larger the number doesn't mean it's the newest. Here is a list of the different trees:

212xx = AKU1, all builds leading up to and including WM 6.5
213xx = MOT motorola
214xx = ???
215xx = SAM samsung

217xx = COM1, continuing dev of 6.5.0.1 - 6.5.0.40
218xx = COM2, continuing dev of 6.5.0.50
219xx = MD, feature test branch, pretty much dead now. (unstable features are added here, this tree is based on COM1, so older base OS code, but the UI/UX code is newer)
22xxx = SEMC sony ericsson
*230xx = COM3, continuing development
*234xx = COM4, appears to be abandoned.
*235xx = COM5, more GUI changes here. New Outlook Interface.
*236xx = LG Electronics Branch
*24xxx = Possible HTC branch
*280xx, 282xx = WMD. This is a continuation of com3 from 23090. Most of the changes appear to be with IE

Matter of fact I remember reading a "see-you-at-detention" kind of rant from an admin over at xda about how annoyed he was that sooooo many apps were being created as executables when, in reality, they were functioning as services...etc.
It's great that this developer gives the option.

personally in my rom i use opera 9.5 but i would love to know this info just for future updates?

I think they have the same core. So I don't really think there are too many things leaning one way more so the other. I know Opera 10 is pretty great for me memory-wise.

You can have 5 open pages in opera 10 vs 3 9.5 limits you to 3.

But in 10 you give up sliding zoom for prefixed zoom and gain Quick links

Edit 9.7_35758 posted 5-7 pages back is working well so far. No mem problems and 3 open pages and ZOOM.
