Are you talking about S2U2 or the stock 6.5 lock?. I am able to change the lock screen in either case; through Settings application in S2U2 or the Personalize option on the Settings Tab for the 6.5 lock.
The "second lock screen" behavior was probably S2U2 being on and the stock lock screen on behind it. That's happened to me a couple of times. I disabled S2U2 (because of the screwy slider in V2.24) and installed SmartLock 2.0F to auto-initiate the stock 6.5 lock.

I wish you hadn't posted that - Ever since I read your post, my File Explorer has caused freezing. It only seems to freeze on the
root of the storage card. Can you confirm similar behavior?
