Actually, you can't post links to page numbers and expect them to work for everybody. People can have a different number of posts per page set in their User CP, and page numbers won't be the same. Use the #555 link on the top right of the post to get back to a post.

dude everyone posts links to page numbers!! his link works fine but if you want u can start at post #1712 and go from there...

I only have 46 pages in this thread since my "posts per page" setting is different in UserCP. So when he says to go to page #172, what do you think is going to happen? It will go to the 46th page, just as IsLNdbOi said.

What you need to do is post a link to the post, or, if you want to show the thread view, change "post" to "thread" in the link. Example, your post:

Actually, not "everyone" does this. Yes, he is asking for people to change their behavior. There's no way to know how few people change their default view, but there's nothing ridiculous at all to aim for people linking to an actual post rather than to a page, especially since there's really no way to know on what page a given link might appear.

Just because many people do something the wrong way doesn't mean it's not the wrong way.

I kind of like the way drnull does it, but i usually just post the page. I would have to agree it really isn't a big deal to me cause i use the default view, it is more convienient for some people though. Back to mighty rom!

I think the word you're looking for is ridiculous, and it's a little ridiculous to get bent all out of shape when someone suggests a better, more consistent way of permanently linking to posts.

you getting technical over my choice of using using the word "everyone" instead of maybe "plenty people", does not change anything. A person asks for help and i tell him a page number that contains several posts to help him, then it's his problem for not understanding why the page is not right. If that person would have said..."sorry man, i changed my page layout, so could you give me the post number where the conversation starts?", then i'd hook him up with no problem. Now...back on topic please. geez
