I agree it can get pretty confusing where there are 3 or more releases within a single thread. Maybe it's so the pageviews and replies look bigger for their ROMs

Settings>personal>input>word completion>turn it off (at least on 6.5)

Edit again: Verified on my Treo Pro, that's the right path to take.
