unlock, flash clone....help please im lost

okay i would like to think of myself as a moderately technologicly skilled person but for some reason i cant put this together. im trying to get an htc touch onto metro. i thought it was called unlocking at first...then i heard of flashing and thought that was it but now i am lead to belive its actually reffered to as cloning. i am trying to find out if there is a relationship between the 3. ive already managed to unlock my phone (that was a cake walk) but now i need to be pointed in the right direction for the next step.

Most of the posts on here are custom ROMs. Just choose the one you want and download it. Then run the RUU file

Yeah, just make sure your phone is connected to your PC via ActiveSync and run the RUU like he said.

after i flash the custom rom will there be a menu i can change the esn from or is there another program

you won't find much info here on esn modification.
if your carrier won't accept your esn then you should go over to xda and look for info there.
