Wow... I missed a LOT somewhere.

I had been keeping up with the development of things pretty well up through the end of dec/early jan. Then i got tied up in some other things and was just busy in general. Now, I just got my VZW TP and i come back here to see what's current and HOLY COW. Info overload.

From what I can remember, there were big issues in the beginning with freeing up RAM and GPS fixes. (which would be increasingly useful now, seeing as how even my VZNavi doesn't work... error starting gps or something... meh, flashy time )

Is it safe to assume that a majority of the roms out there have these fixes in place already? (namely MightyRom 4.16 or Juicy6, probably, i'm still browsing) I'm concerned that since the stock bloated rom is kinda slow and a bit laggy here and there, that getting such a loaded rom would be just as bad, if not worse.

Also, generic newb question... I do a lot of IMing and would like to do it on the phone, but I haven't found a mobile version of a cross-platform IM program. (like GAIM, or Trillian, or pidgin for the PC) They all seem to just be stripped down versions of individual web messengers for yahoo and msn and aim etc. Any suggestions? I know skype has an app you can run on the phone itself, rather than navigating to a craptastic website. I attempted to use meebo mobile (which is technically designed specifically for the iphone, i think) and it worked, but again, website dependent...

Uhhhh.... i think that's all my questions for now... I'm sure to have more in the future as i get my hands dirty...

Re: Wow... I missed a LOT somewhere.

No. The GPS fix isn't included in any ROM, as far as i know. You have to get the lllboredlll GPS fix and follow the instructions. Once you do it, it will survive ROM updates, as well.

Re: Wow... I missed a LOT somewhere.

the only roms that were "designed" on/for the verizon tp are the ssk and bored's roms. howevermany of the other roms besides those (i recommend the silence rom) will work on your phone but you will most likely have to change the pagepool for them to work.

there is a thread specifically dedicated to the verizon gps fix in this forum the link is in my signature. hope it helps just make sure you read b4 doing anything

Re: Wow... I missed a LOT somewhere.

I personally would recommend Slick

It provides support for Yahoo, ICQ, Aim, MSN, GTalk, and Jabber

Here's the website

http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=slick

Oh, and it's free

I just put the GPS fix on so I'm going to run the VZW rom for a while and see how it works out... i'm new to this, so maybe i should take it slow.

Re: Wow... I missed a LOT somewhere.

Dude dont even bother with the stock rom. seriously.... thats what i thought in the beginning but was soon to realize that it was a huge mistake.... Soooooooooo many advancements in the custom roms that have been around for a while and are so much more stable and efficient.

and for the messaging thing you could try NIMBUZZ >>> www.nimbuzz.com
