Possible Community Chef project
Well i seen some ideas by some well talented chefs on ppcgeeks like JAKDILLAD, MightyMike and some others wanting to start a community Rom project where a group of use chefs will work together to make possible community roms including a Lite version, a Loaded Version, and im hoping that each will be carrier based, so we need a full version to work with sprint+alltel, and then to another to work with Verizon and the remaining carriers.
Please post your thoughts on the possible project and how many of you would want something like this to go into development. NO DONATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS PROJECT, so please do not try and force us to take your money, all chefs will be wearing bullet proof vest and other available clothing while in a heavily armed kitchen, guarded by 60 bull dogs, and 34 highly trained security officers to keep the kitchen from getting into the wrong hands. Chef Supporters so far JakDillard, MerdinH, MightyMike, SBR_L3GION, LilRico, lllBoredlll, JmzTaylor, Yay4Juggs, Hibby50, xweaponx |
Re: Possible Community Chef project
Great idea, but how will the "community" decide what and what-not to include? It seems like many of the customs ROMS are very different depending on personal preferences.
Can we see a "Loaded Version" that does NOT include TF3D? Hopefully that wouldn't be too difficult since alot of work in cooking is making everything compatible with TF3D. I appreciate all the custom ROMS that don't include it but it is almost always the "Lite" version. |
Re: Possible Community Chef project
That is in fact the best idea ever uttered! I read about the possibility in Juggs thread when JD mentioned it and I got a slow roaster at the thought of flashing THAT ROM someday!!

Re: Possible Community Chef project
That would be a good idea it would be a Quite a large download since it would be the compiled ingredients from the chefs but definitely not impossible to do I owuld like it to be like Calkulins kitchen so it would be easy for the everyday user also.

Things to worry about are, who's kitchen base are you going to use and what route to take. Then the infamous question what version Manila. What reg edits and rgu's? Which OEM's, what drivers? How are we going to be certian that each chef has put in as much work as the others? What sys, what xip, I mean how are all these chef's going to decide on 1 when all the ROM's here all use a different one. The concept is a nice one, but the execution is going to be the toughest IMHO. How are you all going to know that chef A did a change that chef B doesn't know and is causing a bug? There's just too much that can go on... If all of these issues, on the other hand, are resolved, then wow... This can be one amazing project!!! |
Re: Possible Community Chef project
A PPCGEEKS community project would be awesome! kinda seems like a race to crank out the best rom IMHO in CDMA. I can understand Y4J's decision, last ROM was awesome btw! I would like to get involved myself if time permits. I've been flashin' roms left and right lately. I appreciate what everyone has contributed. I've been focusing on the guts of the OS and Touch Flo 3D. I was interested in getting TF3D ver 1.x to function like Rhodium, mainly the FUNCTIONAL calendar tab. Also, learning a bit more about the driver/performance issues with the Qualcomm chips. As for now, I lost my job awhile ago so my devotion to contribution may be sporadic. Otherwise, I think the idea Merdin brought up is great! hope to see it happen

I did refine a kitchen based off of Calkulins tools that I personally think would be a great tool for the everyday user if this every makes it to kitchen form. I think the first step needs to be, define exactly who is on the team for this project and then vote on the ingredients. That way one person's choices arent leading the entire project. |
Re: Possible Community Chef project
I like the idea. I get lost with all the roms out there, and they all seem the same (no offense) I can only imagine what a noob feels like.

Re: Possible Community Chef project
I think this is exactly what is needed. This is will allow more stability and efficiency in development. This would allow bugs to be resolved quicker and more ideas to flow on how to structure the rom. As far as structure I would run two versions simultaneously one an ultra stable version with everything working and efficient speed good for everyday use and a developmental version with the latest greatest and as things get fixed in latest greatest they can be added to stable this will also decrease the number of releases for stable version. I would suggest a kitchen so that roms can be built to persons personal preferance. Out of all the roms I have tried and I have tried almost all I personaly like Mighty Mike the best in my opion he has strived to have a stable rom and has meet this goal better then anyone else its just my opion. I have been using custom roms since the apache and have seen alot of roms but the one mistake that I see is everyone tries to stuff all of these programs into a rom and it is just not needed or does it work. I undestand why they try it but it does not work for stability I think the kitchen was the best idea but it has alot of stability problems and you only get a few good roms out of it every now and then. I think we should try to enhace on the speed and stability of the OEM I mean I want to use my device I would say if you want to just flash and play with the roms buy a devel device. My ideal rom/kitchen is one that is fast stable has added functionality over OEM and just works and this could happen if we would stick with a single project as a comunity instead of having 15 or 20 going on.

LilRico, you pretty much hit the nail on the head with this post. Although most of us are pretty optimistic, and we should be because you cookers are highly skilled and obviously intelligent beings. It all depends on keeping the egos in check and as you mentioned, execution. This has the potential to be an amazing feat for sure. I just hope that everything works out here. |

Seems SPJ is doing something similar, I think this is a great Idea! |
Re: Possible Community Chef project
As long as we ALSO keep what we got going now!
Call me the contrarian...But I sort of like the current environment. (this is not a debate, just a statement to describe where I'm coming from). I am a little biased, growing up in the US where competition has been king). Currently it seems Cookers need to make their wares very good...and keep updating...lest they get left behind. I hope this new project won't squash that. |

Dont worry there should be no interference with regular rom releases, as this will not be worked on at all times whenever the chefs have time to work on it they can work on it, and at some point we will have it all ready. |
