Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I am currently using Mighty's ROM but no matter what ROM I use now my keyboard its seems to get locked until I hit the space button. Then eventually I cannot use it at all until I do a Hard Reset. Then it works fine for a little while then the same thing happens again. I have had this issue on 2 different ROM and now i see some people reporting it on Jucies and other roms. Has anyone else had these issues? Any fix for it because I am thinking it a software issue that is causing the hardware issue. BTW my TP is only 1 month old.

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
wow i just got my replacement in the mail cause i had the exact same problem. I tried stock ROMs, customs and hard flashing and the keyboard NEVER worked unless you pressed space.
I used Mightymouse and Juicy |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
Yea its being reported by others too.

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
It sucks. HTC should be ashamed of themselves. Producing a keyboard phone where the keyboard does not work.
Back to my CPM days of my Zilog Z80 , the keyboard has always worked fine. |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
Ive had issues like that too with a couple custom roms. Could it be a common driver issue? It is obviously a software issue since it is solved by a hard reset. (usually soft for me)
|
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
now that you mention it...I haven't had a single ROM that didn't have some sort of SIP issue.
hmmmmm.....There are some very smart people in this group...they'll figure it out. |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I've flashed many custom roms and stock, and haven't had that issue once. odd?
|
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
a wee bit odd. Either way, its happening to me. Works fine for a bit on a fresh rom or hard reset then slowly reappears until a hard reset or new rom is required.
|
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
yes same issue here. the light turn on but the buttons are not responsive.

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
today is not my day
having problems flashing a ROM after the one i was using started to have problems. i was able to flash a new rom. it needs a lot of work IMO and i still have problems with the keyboard. it doesnt work.. im going to try and flash one more time to see if it fixes the problems, i just hope i dont have any issues... the 1st time i flashed i didnt have one problem. now im having a lot of them.. :( |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I exchanged mine cause the keyboard quit working. I've had the replacement 2 weeks and the keyboard died again. My mom's stock TP is starting to have keyboard issues too so I really don't think its ROM related.
Apparently there's a connector somewhere under the spacebar area that gets loose. I got my mom's keyboard working again by squeezing it where the spacebar was. Didn't work for mine though. I'm tempted to say screw it and take the cover off and fix it myself. ](*,) |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
yup it's a hardware issue. Mine started with the space bar, soon after it turned into texting like this "hhhowwwwwww arrrrrrrrrre yyooouuuu?", and after that the light went on but no response from the keys. If you are still under the sprint warranty you don't have to go through TEP and you can get a new one in a few days. You even get to keep your old battery!! Well, if they don't send you a refurb.

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
My TP is 2 months old now. I was using the stock Sprint ROM till yesterday, when I loaded up MightyROM 4.15. My device never had a HardSPL and ROM flash before yesterday. My hard slideout keyboard always worked without any problems at all with stock Sprint ROM 1.03.651.4. (That's the ROM my TP came with.) But since loading MightyROM 4.15 I've had one instance where the hard slideout keyboard stopped working until I soft reset.
So to me (for my own case) it's got to be an issue within how customized ROMs are handling the hard slideout keyboard. Soft qwerty works fine. And I never had this issue with the stock Sprint ROM which I used for months. Making my first venture into customized ROMs, I think MightyROM 4.15 is great. I'm sure some of the other customized ROMs are exciting too. So I hope this issue is resolved. I seldomly use the hard slide out keyboard, but obviously we all want it to always work. |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
wow that's really weird, I just flashed 4.14 the other day and with the first bootup I had a problem with the keyboard responding. I reflashed to 4.15 yesterday after it came up and I just experienced the same problem today. I think this is definitely some sort of driver issue. My stock Sprint ROM never had a problem with the keyboard. This is my only gripe so far with MightyROM, besides that the ROM is way snappier than the stock. I hope it's fixed somehow and soon without having to reflash. I have a feeling its something to do with the hardware keyboard lag fix as I think the keyboard input is just freezing up somehow. Sometimes when the keyboard doesn't work the entire OS starts to respond really slowly.

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
My keyboard completely died and is now unresponsive. Im flashing back to stock re locking and taking it to Sprint. I don't have sprints insurance but since its only 2 months old am I covered under the manufacture warranty? Does Sprint take them back and give you a new one? Also I have a InvisaShield on my TP can i peel it off and use the warrenty on that to get a new one?
|
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
Man, i don't know if it has to do with me being on Telus and most users with these issues are sprint, but.... Not even ONCE have i experienced anything like you guys are saying.
So weird... I think sprint blew it on this one! I'm just looking at all the posts here and everyone is on sprint and i constantly hear stories mostly from sprint users about their hardware keyboard conking out. Man this sucks! |

You should read through this tread about returning your device. It has information about both Sprint and manufacturer returns. Regarding InvisibleShield you should be able to return it for free replacement. Although I'd recommend taking this opportunity to try another body cover like BodyGuardz instead. I know I'm glad I switched. |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
It's not sprint specific Mike. I too have had this problem since day 1. (verizon) I've troubleshot this problem as much as my noobness will allow. The problem is that I corrupt my own testing by flashing so often.
I have returned 2 phones due to this issue, and am on my third. Things I have noticed: 1. The keyboard seems to lock the phone up LESS when I slide it open from the today screen. 2. The phone locks up MORE when opening it in the middle of an app, such as SMS or Remote Desktop. 3. Some ROMS seem to act differently - less lock ups, more lock ups. ( I mainly cook with SSK and different builds) 4. The problem is more prevalent when TF3D is running. 5. The first 2 times I walked into the Verizon store to show them the problem, it didn't happen of course. 6. A verizon rep told me a lot of TP's get returned due to this issue. |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
WTF. I think my phone heard me now out of the blue text is working again
|
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
well i dont know what may cause this problem but i cant get it to work. i had the last juicy rom before the tp2 update and it worked fine for about a day or so, then the keyboard died. flashed to a diff rom and ended up with mikes 4.5 but i have the same issue.
not sure if its the a driver or hardware. im going to flash one more time.. if that doesnt work im going to flash back to stock and take it to sprint. but i would like to resolve this... i dont know enough to figure this out software wise. so any help would be great.... |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I'm not having hardware keyboard problems....I can't get a SIP to work to save my life....I simply can't figure it out. I have a suspicion that it has to do with Advanced Config....remember we had problems with the Titan?
I'm going to flash tonight and see how long I can keep the SIP working |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
Sorry but the TP is a piece of $*&^... Nothing but problems since i got it, now my keyboard is out.. Im bummed out since i paid retail price for it :(...... Anyways, my question is, is there an easier way of flashing to the stock rom...

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I had the old Dream 0.5 ROM when it first came out (Nov 08?) until about 3 weeks ago (beginning of March) when my keyboard started having the same unresponsive/locking issues where I would type and the backlight would turn off while typing and nothing on the screen. I thought I just needed to reflash, so I went through a lot of the popular custom ROMs on here and ended up with Juggalo, same problem. I flashed back to Sprint stock, same problem except the built in SMS app appeared to crash half the time when I tried to type with the keyboard - though it seemed to get a clue when I pressed hard on the space-bar.
So I relocked, headed to the store, they recreated the same problem with it and got me a new one out of the box (I have the full insurance coverage and they forgot to put in the order for a day). I flashed to Juggalo and all seems fine now. I forgot how smooth typing was and didn't realize I was putting up with the performance issues for so long. |

And how is a custom ROM HTC's fault?? Just curious.. |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
its a physical keyboard issue...
like literally the cable comes disconnected im a tech for a sprint affiliate its been greatly discussed amongst the tech in our stores... its an easy fix...you just need the proper screwdriver...u may be able to get away with using a very small flathead...like the kind used to fix eye glasses... you just unscrew the screws under the battery cover (theres 4) use your thumbnail to go around the edges pop the back off...slid the keyboard up and you'll see your cable right in the middle unattached... ive fixed 4 "non working" keyboards this way i think its just poor work putting it together there still may be a software issue...but i would try this fix first if anyone needs diagrams i think i have one saved in an email...let me know and ill post them |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
Mine had the same keyboard problem. Mine is also a VZW model, not Sprint. When mine locked up I could wait for a while and it would unfreeze and start working again...but not for very long. I tried multiple soft resets and finally a hard reset. I flashed the ROM shortly after getting the phone but the problem started almost 3 months after flashing that ROM and me not changing anything. The got a refurb replacement under warranty. The replacement phone's keyboard feels different when typing. It doesn't have the snappy tactile feel of the old keyboard. This one feels like the keys are harder to press and don't snap/click like the old one.

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I'm on my third sprint month in a month and half with keyboard issues. It seemed to work a little more with the nueKB backlight always on. I've been using Juicy and Mighty Mike roms. Its not too far to go to the store so I don't mind I just wish there was another phone on Sprint I would switch to if I had a chance.

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I guess I can consider myself one of the lucky few around here. I've been flashing my phone sice Mighty 4.09 and I have not had any issues. I am currently running Mighty 4.15 as of yesterday on sprint. Also, I am posting this from my TP.The phone I have is new and never had change it since January. One thing I always do aftter flashing is do another hard reset just in case something merges from the last ROM.

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I have noticed this after flashing to a 6.5 ROM then downgrading back to stock Alltel ROM. It will type and then all of a sudden the TP freezes and then it will repeat the last key i pressed like 5 times sometimes i have to slide it closed and open again to get it to work.

I've only had it once so far and a soft reset resolved it, hoping not to experience it again. I guess I just hope this is somehow resolved for everyone. |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I flashed a friends pro to mighty ROM (i think, i did 6 diff flashes on another phone that day too...) and the keyboard stopped working when he was chasing someone down(hes a police officer) lol...

Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I worked through this issue after fighting it all day yesterday -
This issue stemmed from the installation of Might 4.15, and required hard reboot after 1-2 emails or texts. Finally, after installing several other ROMs, thinking the image had become corrupt, I landed on Sceptre Rom 2.0. I played around for a bit with it, and the keyboard kicked back in perfectly. Now I am running the most recent build of Juicy 5.0, without a single issue. |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
i have the stock rom, never flashed to anything, only changed the manilla files and my keyboard is doing exactly like the OP.
never had this problem before a week ago when i dropped it for the first time since getting it. prolly gonna get a replacement |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
i havent had any problems with my verizon touch pro. the keyboard may be laggy but its never stop working *knock on wood*
|
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
Not sure if this is the same thing, but all the hard keys on my TP stopped working...keyboard, volume, etc. Everything was back to normal after doing a soft reset (stylus to reset button).
Mighty ROM has been fantastic. It replaced a horrible experience with another "kaotic" ROM. |
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I've been complaining about for the last 2 weeks! Glad this thread WAS STARTED!! Thought I was the only one with this STUPID A$$$ ISSUE. Happened when I started flashing Mighty roms! But I love Mighty roms to be honest!
|
Re: Custom ROMS causing keyboard issues?
I've had it happen to 3 touch pro's now, one stuck, 2 custom roms. I exchanged the first one and it started doing it after a week.
I decided to chance removing the keyboard and sure enough, on both phones the cable had come loose. I popped it back on and did the same to the other phone. Both phones work just fine now. It takes a T6 torx bit to remove the screws behind the battery cover, then you can pry the keyboard up out of the case. If I feel motivated enough I may take pics later to make it clearer. I know there's a post around page 3 somewhere that has a pic too. |
