Maximizing Windows Mobile performance - how many files in your IMGFS?

Chefs,

The number of files in the IMGFS has a direct impact on Windows Mobile performance, due to the way a request for a file to be retrieved from NAND is handled. Applications installed after boot (to directories other than \Windows) do not affect this performance (at least at a file system level). This is one of the reasons stripped ROMs are so fast.

So my question is this: How many files + modules do you have in your IMGFS directory (number of files or modules at the root of the dump directory before the ROM is created)?

Give me a short 2-3 sentence description of your ROM (stripped totally nude, semi-naked, moderate bloatware, blinged-out glam edition, etc.) and the number of files + modules. Pls include SYS version and pagepool size and phone (Sprint or VZW).

I'll start with my semi-naked personal ROM. 21018 SYS, all HTC bloatware but on a diet, Manila (primary file offender at 600 files), You-tube (201 files). 2977 files + modules. It seems quite fast / responsive. 10MB pagepool on VZW HW. I strip all the .RGU and .DSMs.

Thx - FPOS

P.S. Has anyone tried forcing Manila or YouTube to a directory other than \Windows (after boot - i.e. not part of IMGFS)?

Hey Former,

I'm not a ROM chef, and don't know the acronyms you speak of, but I find this topic interesting. I had asked ScottC about "pruning" his kitchen: I use SSK15C2 kitchen, and I have stripped out many extraneous audio/video files and .tsk files, except essential, or those I'm not sure will break something if I move them. I create a hierarchy of folders for alerts, alarm, rings and themes under the Windows folder, but SD "My Docs" would be the ideal place for them if I could get CE to recognize that folder for internal Sounds and Notifications, etc.

I agree that Manila is a BIG hog, and hate those files dumped in the Windows folder; I have tried to cook ROMs w/o Manila-- I use SPB MS-- but certain "skins" get messed up and the clean Tahoma font turns into Times if I don't cook Manila in; eg, the soft keyboard and Active Sync chooser skin.

Anyways, I'm not nearly at your, Scott's or Bored's level on this stuff, but I like tinkering and optimizing, and I like lean/clean/functional ROMs with just the right amount of "eye-candy"

I load up my ROMs post flash w/50+ apps using Sashimi for customization, so I'm looking for the nirvana of RAM, stability and performance.

Thanks for all the work you do on XIPs: I'm currently using 21015.21018XIP build w/10MB PP and seems to be stable for me. What will I see by going to 21018 all around, and for that matter, some folks have said they think 20954 is best experience.

OK, thanks for listening... off soap-box now.

TTFN

Re: Maximizing Windows Mobile performance - how many files in your IMGFS?

This question belongs in the XIP thread, I think. But I found 21018 to be much faster (more responsive loading dlls and exes and launching windows) than 21015. I found 21015 on par with 20764 and 21109. I found 20954 sluggish compared to the others. That said, all of the above except for 21109 were stable. I did see a few quirks with 21109.

Two reasons, neither good: 1) No place to upload it that others could access and 2) No time to support questions about it, though it is working fine so there shouldn't really be any questions. But again move any discussion to PM and out of this thread please.

Re: Maximizing Windows Mobile performance - how many files in your IMGFS?

I dont have an exact count at the moment but my stripped ROM would back this up. Even on the VZW TP with a small pagepool of 6mb it is astonishlingly fast. I played with 10mb and felt I was wasting available ram because 6 performed so well. Plus I stripped just about all non-essentials. Only things I have left is a handful of images and I would guess that count is around 30 or so files. I spent a ton of time stripping this down to make it as light weight as I could but yet leave enough of my OEM section included to have a pleasent experience.

Re: Maximizing Windows Mobile performance - how many files in your IMGFS?

Just fer $hits and giggles I tried moving Youtube and Manilla out of Windows into other directories. Neither liked it. Next step would be to dig through the code to change any hard-coded paths from \Windows to something else. But that would take far more time than I'm willing to put into it. So if you want either of these bloated pigs, you are stuck with the file count and corresponding slow-down anytime something tries to load a file from \Windows. Which is, well, like, most of the time...

I have got a great place for you to upload your work. Now you have to decide if you are willing to get rid of reason 2.

Let me know if you want it.

Well, let me clarify #2. If something is broken, I'll fix it. I use this same build every day, so if something is broken, chances are it is broken for me too. However if I can't confirm it (i.e. it it is working for me) I won't put the time in to debug it. What I also don't have the time to do is one-off custom versions or change what's loaded. I'm just sharing what I use since you guys have asked. If that's cool, send me a PM with upload info and I'll post it.
