Android 2.1 - v2 (beta) for your CDMA HTC Hero!

Why another build? And why back to 2.1?
We were ecstatic last night when the Eris 2.1 release got leaked. We had hoped it would help us get camera and mms working (it hasn't) however it did give us a MUCH smoother build and cleaner base to build off of. "Out of the box" almost nothing was working. Luckily toast was quick to be able to adapt the current fixes we had in the other rom to this one. I then took it and cleaned it up a bit. We're happy to release this because while it still isn't a daily rom for most users, I think you'll amazed at how smooth this build runs.

Keep in mind that this is still a beta/development rom. It is not meant as a daily rom and does have bugs.

Major thanks to toastcfh (donate to him) because without him this rom wouldn't be where it is.

This rom is based on the leaked HTC Eris 2.1 rom for Verizon.

Changes to the new 2.1 base:

• Market with protected apps (thanks to this being a proper build)
  
• Gmail push working (because it's a proper build)
  
• Multitouch (toast)
  
• Multihome (toast)
  
• Accelerometer sensor (toast)
  
• GPS.conf (thanks to theoottesen)
  
• OpenGL ES Lite driver (thanks to phhusson and MrPippy for the patches they made for winmo devices -- yes, winmo!)
  
• Removed Verizon updater app (flipz)
  
• Removed Verizon bootscreen (flipz)
  
• Moved QO and Maps to /data/ because /system/ was full (flipz)
  
• Added busybox (toast)
  
• Added SuperUser (flipz)
  
• Added WifiTether 1.7-pre-2 (flipz)

Doesn't work :

• Camera
  
• Visual voicemail
  
• MMS

How to flash it:

1. Boot in to recovery and create a nandroid backup
   
2. Use the menu item "Wipe data/factory reset" (yes, a restore is required)
   
3. Apply it like a normal update.zip -- be patient. The first boot will take a while.
   
4. After it finishes booting for the first time, restart it at least once!

All general warnings apply when flashing this rom, just like any other.

Sweet..!! Im willing to donate to Devs that release a stable ROM.. Ive been anxiously waiting to move from "ancient" 1.5 on the Hero...come on Sprint get with the program...

Just an update for you guys (no new download available)

-Got wifi working (that was an easy one of just replacing the driver. A few guys on xda found the same thing).

- I was also able to get it to recognize on the Sprint network and both make and receive text messages, how I've stumbled in to a huge memory leak that is causing the phone to become non-responsive and only have 7Mb of free memory after a short period of time.

Huge pot of coffee on. Let's see what else can get done today.

Hitting a brick wall. I'm certain this isn't going to be possible until we can get our hands on an updated kernel. In digging through the settings I found that the droid makes cdma settings to the framework.jar. Those settings don't exist in the gsm version that we have available to us. Rebuilding the framework isn't possible without having the kernel source. Kernel source isn't available to us. So it's looking like this won't be anything other than a novelty.

But yay for a new forum section!

Yessir! Our Hero family is growing another "+" for the Hero... last I checked the Mogul section was no where near as useful as ours.... honestly it seems pretty bad in every forum I've been on.

I would think of it in the same type of way as ppckitchen for winmo. A la carte if you will. The kitchen would basically include the full rom package. You go through and check/uncheck items as you see fit. It zips up what you want, signs it, and spits out an update.zip. Voila.

That's the process for making custom roms?

I would love to learn how to do any development. I usually am able to follow most things on here and have been flashing since my Mogul, then my TP, now the Hero but I want to contribute!

It takes me hours to decipher some of this stuff when I first learn how to flash and I figured If that process was that hard (initally), developing wasnt possible considering I have no programming background or experience beyond what I've learned from you all.

I'd love to get my hands on one of those kitchens and play around with it.
