OK I fixed this by disabling the HTC SMS.

Now works just fine.

FYI, please note this is the best functioning dialer I have ever had. For years I have had problems with Windows "phones" and making phone calls. This dialer is consistently responsive - nice to actually my phone also work as a phone...
