Help! Bootloader will not connect to USB

It has been working through all the betas of Windows 7 including RC until yesterday.
I can connect via WMDC, manipulate files etc but when I try to flash a new ROM the bootloader does not connect in USB mode. The space at the bottom of the screen where 'USB' usually appears is blank.
I have flashed back to the Telus shipped ROM from Internal Storage but still no luck on bootloader connecting.
I can still flash whatever I want from Internal Storage so that is not a problem, but I would like to know what has happened to the USB connection

Any ideas?
