Unlock to flash official/shipped roms?

I've recently flashed my phone to the leaked "official" sprint updated ROM found here on PPCgeeks. Everything worked fine and I did not have to unlock the phone before I flashed it like I see people saying all over the forums.

Now I have to give my phone back to Sprint for an exchange. Is it possible to download the original shipped ROM and flash my phone without having to unlock it?

From what I understand, if its a official ROM then no unlocking is required. Am I right? Can I just download the "sprint shipped" thats floating around on the forum and flash it to my phone?

I just don't wanna brick it.

Can someone clarify?

if its offical/shipped (made by htc) then there is no need to unlock. you only need to unlock so that you could flash custom roms.
